Girls can be anything when they grow up – until they start playing with Barbie

Just because kids have iPads doesn't mean toys have lost their impact. It's time to deconstruct the plastic blond bombshell – especially the swimsuit edition

"After only five minutes of playing with Barbie, girls in our sample said that boys could do more jobs in the future than they could. Girls who played with Mrs Potato Head, on the other hand, responded that they could do about the same number of jobs as boys someday."

I've heard the Mr. Potato Head earns .75 cents more than Mrs. Potato Head does.

Anyway.....

Barbie has had a gazzillion careers. She's been everything from a beauty queen, to a veterinarian, to a doctor, to a biker chick. If anything, Ken just stands there and smiles while Barbie gets to has all the fun. I never got the animosity towards Barbie.

I had Jane and John West dolls,Jane had all the same accessories that John did.She looked capable of being tough.I really didn't care for the dolls that much,it was the horse they came with.

I don't know where this idea comes from with these folks about toys, the poor Barbie doll has been on the receiving end of this for decades now. From body image, to gender identity, to this weird idea that it discourages little girls from thinking they can do the same amount of jobs as boys later on even tho as said Barbie has had about every career possible.

I find those Bratz and Monster High dolls way more sexualized and distasteful

+1

But I still think Barbie is harmful in terms of self image. I have a neice that insists she will be a model when she grows up because if Barbie can do it, she can do it. She figures blonde hair, blue eyes, and a tiny waistline is all that it takes to be successful. Although at this point, she is 15 years old and I am still waiting for reality to sink in.

Me and my older brother when we were younger always enjoyed mutilating our sister's Barbie dolls like tossing the doll over in the neighbors yard and it gets all chewed up by the dog and also melting barbies face with a magnifying glass stuff like that! I know it was mean we thought it was funny my sister always got pissed and threw tantrums over it but if you think about it we were doing her a favor without knowing so that barbie doesnt effect her perception of her image. Now shes independant and kicks ass! I guess early sibling rivalry does pay off!
