Monday, 20 January, is a federal holiday to honor the birth of Martin Luther King, Jr.

And, guess how the Repugnicans will be honoring not only MLK's birthday, but also Abraham Lincoln's birthday?

That's right. A gun raffle.

What the Repugnicans thought of Mr. King.

And happy MLK day, to you, sir!
As for how the right's views of King and his holiday have changed over time, I have to wonder - - considering how civil rights leaders like John Lewis and Jesse Jackson are targets for attack by the right, would they treat King any differently if he was alive today?

Well, as both men were murdered by fire arms, it is maybe a little callous.

I hardly think there's some kind of evil and intentional connection. This is 2014 not 1964 or whenever.
Both were shot by armed individuals, not their guns themselves but I can't expect you or your buddy AP to grasp that.
Besides, the raffle is for an AR-15. The gun used in Lincoln's assassination was a derringer and for King a Remington 30-06 pump.
Really, trying to paint this as "insensitivity" is pretty weak and in poor taste in itself.

I hope you had to Google that, because it would be pretty creepy and unsettling if you knew that off-hand!

Seems like the Kennedys should get on board and also have a raffle.

If the KKK held a rally complete with an effigy of a black man being hanged with an electrical cord, they might rationalize that blacks who were the victims of lynchings were hanged with rope, and so no one should be offended. Well, a hanging is still a hanging, and a gun of any sort is still a gun.

Where was this rally and when?
Historically, the KKK has had more enemies than just blacks.
And in all seriousness I don't see malice in that gun raffle. What it is is that you think all republicans/conservatives are racist and any angle that can feed into that is fair game to at least try. Just throw it up there and see if it sticks. Right?

I never said all conservatives are racists. I was just trying to make a point - that even the most innocent thing can look inappropriate and sinister in the wrong context. And that includes raffling guns on the MLK holiday.

Uh huh...
What could have been a noble and sincere thread honoring Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King was instead kicked off with this:

And are the proceeds from that raffle going to something sinister?
