May 05, 2014, Pew Research USA:
2.5 million people self-identified as "Hispanic/some other race" in the 2000 census, then switched to "Hispanic-white" in the 2010 census
and
1.3 million people self-identified as "Hispanic-white" in the 2000 census, then switched to "Hispanic/some other race" in the 2010 census

Thus, a net increase of 1.2 million self-identified "white people" of Hispanic ancestry. Is this a trend? Is this due to better assimilation, English skills, and increased prosperity in the USA as some suggest, or some other reason ?

Who knows?

Within Latin culture itsself race is a more mutable concept than in Anglo Protestant America Norte. In Brazil they say "money bleaches". As you rise in social status your 'race' (in the eyes of others) somehow also morphs towards the lighter ( from Black to Mulatto to White). So Latin immigrants in the USA may carry on with that notion as they achieve success in the USA. In other countries (like Peru, or Mexico) where the African slave population was tiny but there were large numbers of Indians to conquer- substitute "Black" with "Indian", and substitute "mulatto" with "mestizo", and the same idea applies.

My local district of the national company I work for is very hispanic in the composition of the work force. This got me thinking about how I would classify my coworkers. Some are VERY dark, and very Incan, or Mayan looking. So I would check the box "hispanic, other race" if I were filling out thier census forms for them. But the brother-sister team I work with a lot - both could be classed either way-"hispanic -white", or "hispanic-other" because they both are kinda Caucasian looking. Though even they both are obviously not White bread Anglo Americans. Nor would they even pass as south europeans.Dispite the girl's blonde hairstyle she doesnt exactly look even "Spanish" in the "coming from the country of Spain" sense ( though many Americans call anyone from Spanish speaking Latin America "Spanish") because this pair have rather Indian looking facial features (despite their relatively light skin hue). Those two could call themselves pretty much whatever they want to call themselves.

We're liberal, tolerant, multicultis who hate ourselves for a fact of our birth. We're disgusted by the Hispanics that they actually see themselves as something we hate and despise.

Being serious: if that's how they feel, good on them. :)
