Personally, I am glad that I won't live forever and, this may sound weird, I hope that death is simply annihilation. I take what enjoyment I can from life and from my work but I am comforted by the fact that my existence will end someday. I'm not suicidal or even generally miserable but I have little attachment to my life.

I think that this is an unusual belief on my part and I am interested in what you all think.

Personally? I'm horrified you think that way, simply accepting oblivion.

Death reminds us to savor every moment, because each memory is only made once. Without Death life is pointless. It reminds us in the end, no matter how powerful one is you can never escape it - truly Death is the great equalizer. The end itself isn't that bad either, just a long dreamless nap from which there is no escape.

As you can see I'm also pretty at peace with Death. Accepting your own morality is vital to your sanity.

This, coming from a guy whose avatar was, until recently, of someone trying to cheat death. (I'm talking about Liquid Snake parasitising Ocelot....)

How can one enjoy life with a deadline?

Would you value your life as much if it was infinite?

And I'm trying to change my avatar to the Discworld version of Death.

Good choice! (How do you do a thumbs-up smiley?) I love Death from Discworld. In fact, Reaper Man is my personal favourite of the Discworld novels.

Actually, I'm meeting Terry Pratchett on Wednesday. :D

I prefered Mort and Hogfather but Reaper Man was good.

Quote:
IT'S THE IMPRESSION ON THEIR LITTLE FACES I LIKE, said the Hogfather.
'You mean the sort of fear and awe and not knowing whether to laugh or cry or wet their pants?'
YES. NOW THAT IS WHAT I CALL BELIEF.

(With respect to Wowbagger the infinately prolonged...)

I would make a list of every being in the universe (in alphabetical order, of course) and personally visit each one in order to insult them.

I just don't see the point at getting upset about death. It's like getting upset at the wind for blowing. You could curse the wind, you could spend your life looking for a way to stop it, but that strikes me as a waste of time you could be spending just making the most of what you have (however ever little it may be).

That's probably what I would do too, just for something to do. Boredom scares me more than death.

Why's that? It's coming whether you accept it or not, so you might as well.

As long as culture exists, and it continues to evolve, there'd always be something to do. But I like Wowbagger's suggestion.

Now lemme see, I need a particle accelerator, a liquid lunch, and a pair of rubber bands.....

I would like to live forever. I dont' feel that way in the normal instinctive sense of trying to delay death as much as possible, but I like the prospect of how much I could learn in such a time span. I'd like to have enough time to learn every human language, every programming language, and become a specialist in every possible field. I am greedy, I crave knowledge.

I would get to witness the apocalypse, which I actually think I'd want. The way it is now, I feel like I'm watching a movie with the last half of it missing. I want to see how the story of humanity ends.

I don't think such a hope is impossible. This body would give out long before then, but given how we're learning more and more about the human mind all the time, it isn't beyond hope that in 60 years, my memories might be transferrable to a machine. I'd be happier as a computer anyway. Computers are so much more logical than human beings. :)

I wouldn't want to live forever. I'd probably get bored after the first billion years or so...
