Is the Old Testament really much better than the Quran? that is a tough one they are both pretty awful.

They are both violent and inciting. So it would be hypocritical to criticize one without the other. I would say though, the incitement in the Hebrew Bible (whilst not an a excuse) is more remote in the sense that you don't necessarily have to apply that situation to modern one, or view as an absolute command, but just an example of gods wrath. I find the commands in the Quran more explicit and leave less to the imagination.

Now on to Talmudic rulings. These supposed to make the Jewish faith more civilized, it might in practice work, although some of rules are downright bizarre (but actually does influence a lot of Islamic doctrine too). Much of it is internal it apples to Jews themselves. I think it can sometime foster an unhealthy attitude towards non-Jewish people. The Hadiths IMO are less benign, they concern everyone, they aren't an improvement or a refinement at all.
