What if George S. Patton have direct control over Normandy landing.

We all know that General Patton lost command of the Normandy landing operation because of the infamous "from the slapping incident"

As a consolation prize he got command of the pontoons toys -)

I wonder whether if he commanded the entire operation and not General Omar Bradley, the Western Allies losses could be much lower?

I get the feeling Patton wouldn't have been as patient as Bradley--thus, possibly incurring more, rather than less, casualties.

I rather see it this way as well. As a former calvalry man, Patton seemed to excel at fast advances. I am not sure how he would have handled the infamous hedgerows that slowed things after the initial landing.

I once, in one of our monthly Polish historical read that Patton is the American equivalent of Zhukov, the man of steel who liked to dangerous maneuvers, and despite the high military rank, often commanded from the first line.

I had not thought of that, but I can understand the comparison of Patton to Zhukov. They were both quite aggressive at pushing forward and preferring to alway take the offensive role.

"Taking the initiative" in battle leads to victories--but it also leads to lots of casualties, especially if the strategy turns out of have had an incorrect basis.
