as it was in the South, take a look at this informative online article. It clearly was not as important in the North but became a cultural institution in the South:

Confederate apologists don't respond to facts, they just try to distract you with charm and hospitality and fried butter.

Slavery existed. Since the 1600s. It was brought in by the British, who had huge rice farming in South Carolina.

Also the British developed plantations in the Islands.

Both the French and Spanish had slavery, and held Florida, and all the land drained by the Mississippi.

Free Blacks owned slaves in South Carolina. They were famous for buying them off the boat and training them for field work. Resold, they made money and bought a lot of land.

Slightly further inland, was Creek. They captured runaway slaves and enslaved them. The Five Civilized tribes of the Southeast all farmed and owned slaves. They had been trading with the French, Spanish, British, for over two hundred years. They also owned cattle, horses, pigs.

Early 1800s, the south was French, Spanish, Choctaw, Cherokee, Creek. The Cherokee had an alphabet and printed a news paper. They were teaching all their children to read, and translating books into Cherokee.

When the British were driven out by the revolting criminals, runaway indentured servants, transported prisoners, they sold their slaves. Many were shipped to their island plantations. They also sold their Rice Plantations to their own New York Holding Companies.

Free Blacks sold developed land to the incoming Americans, with slaves. They also developed Creek Lands, and that was sold as plantations with slaves. They had seen the Cherokee lose their lands, they chose to sell.

Most of the south was good for nothing but Pine. The soils were thin, over hard red dirt, or sand.

Cleared, making pine lumber, Pitch, Turps, Charcoal, planted in Cotton, it looked great.

Sold at a price that the cotton crop would pay for it, in Silver and Gold, the sellers were not around when the first hard rain washed all the topsoil into the creek. Also the slaves were the ones culled for disease and unsellable.

Most of the south is not suitable for cropland. Only the floodplain along rivers would work for continuous farming.

There was not much of that, and Native Americans who had been growing Corn, Beans, Squash for a few thousand years used village rotation farming. Cleared land was planted, the trees built a village, and in two or three years it was time to move on. A people may have a dozen sites where they live and farm, using one at a time and letting soil fertility improve, the deer repopulate, and the trees grow a crop of house poles.

Another slave related business was construction. Now that you have that fine plantation, you need a house that shows your status. Making bricks, Saw Timber, Building, Plaster, and the fine wood work of windows and doors.

Slaves also produced the iron, from smelting ore to finished goods.

No one was importing slaves. The British had stopped, so breeding them became a business. Some people took a personal involvement, producing their own children to sell as slaves. It happened to the extent that hardly any Blacks are less than one third white today.

Sally Hemmings was half sister and slave to Jefferson's wife, and her mother was likely half sister a generation before. Jefferson married rich.

1800, the coast of South Carolina is half Black. 1850, the entire South is half Black. This took keeping everything that could, pregnant. Good Breeder, her Mammy produced 15 in twenty years. New York Investment bankers financed Breeder Farms.

So the South was cleared, of trees and Native Americans, and the soil was exhausted and eroded.

Money was made, Cotton is a high labor crop. Plow and plant, chop weeds with hoes twice, pick, then remove the seeds. A lot of labor went into a bale. Yields declined from the first crop on.

In 1800 none of these people existed. A quarter million slaves along the East Coast. 1850, all new people come into the South, from that America place, and there are several million slaves. There are now forty million. Does anyone think?

Reconstruction was worse, millions arrested, then as prison labor set to cutting down the rest of the trees, Long Leaf Yellow Pine, and 5,000 year old Cypress. That was not slavery, it was Prison Labor, a Judge gave them ten years for no visible means of support.

Around here Reconstruction ends when a one armed Confederate General rounded up all the Union Troops, Carpet Baggers, and put them on a ship. Told if you come back, your next trip down river will be without a ship.

That was during the Teapot Dome Scandal, and the Panic of 1893. They had a right to sell the Navel Oil Reserves to their friends who gave them money, and Wall Street has a right to make money.

Give me a headline that does not involve Washington and Wall Street stealing.

They had to send the Army to hunt down the terrorist Chief Joseph who was going to destroy our Freedoms.

125 years later, nothing has changed.

Great set of maps OAnaO.

You're welcome, Inventor. Nice of you to post some additional info. It is well known in Oklahoma, Indian tribes owned slaves. I didn't know freed blacks bought slaves though, only to resell them for profit instead of granting them freedom.

The Cherokee Nation once counted the descendants of their slaves as members of their tribe but recently expelled them:

Has anyone offered an estimated number of free black men who owned slaves, and how many they owned?

I would be surprised if it was a substantial percentage of the total.

So, barely worth mentioning aside from the academic curiosity:

Quote:
So what do the actual numbers of black slave owners and their slaves tell us? In 1830, the year most carefully studied by Carter G. Woodson, about 13.7 percent (319,599) of the black population was free. Of these, 3,776 free Negroes owned 12,907 slaves, out of a total of 2,009,043 slaves owned in the entire United States, so the numbers of slaves owned by black people over all was quite small by comparison with the number owned by white people. In his essay, " 'The Known World' of Free Black Slaveholders," Thomas J. Pressly, using Woodson's statistics, calculated that 54 (or about 1 percent) of these black slave owners in 1830 owned between 20 and 84 slaves; 172 (about 4 percent) owned between 10 to 19 slaves; and 3,550 (about 94 percent) each owned between 1 and 9 slaves. Crucially, 42 percent owned just one slave.

1830, about one in six Blacks were free.

Like now, about 1% of all people were wealthy.

Blacks bought their own freedom,

Under French and Spanish Law, no one was a slave on Sunday.

They were free to work for wages. and allowed to buy another day.

Slavery was a contract of debt servitude, and with obligations came rights.

Some of those born into slavery were their owners child, liked, well raised, and freed.

Daughters were different, and you had to pay to have them taken. A girl who was given a slave girl when they were both children, later had someone to do the cooking, washing, cleaning, chore sex.

A top slave was $1,000, little girls were the cheapest. It was like buying your daughter a pet.

A three or four year old might cost $50. She might be a Birthday present from family. Slightly younger she wore hand me downs, and was kept in the tradition of dressing dolls.

A lot of the slavery in French Louisiana was the household appliance version. It cooks, cleans, washes. It also produces another slave every couple of years.

As it prepares your food, uses your knives, house slaves were trusted and well treated.

It was not all peace and rainbows. Some Africans were violent, mostly they killed their fellow slaves.

Those are the ones that were sold to plantations, where life was strict, and work hard. Plantations were the prison system of slavery. You may think you have a hard life, it can get much worse. Those that killed other slaves were sent to death camps, the islands, where they would be worked to death.

The Islands, British and French, and South America, slaves declined 20% per decade.

In the American South slaves increased 20% per decade.

As Andrew Young points out today, 93% of Blacks killed are by other Blacks. It was worse back then.

Being murdered by Blacks was a leading cause of slave death. House slaves feared field slaves.

Anthropologists have found that in African Cultures, some 10% of the young males are killed by their own people for being no good. When the slave trade started they sold them instead. We got the rejects of tribal Africa.

Angola Plantation is our State Prison. Men on horseback with guns watch over prisoners working in the fields. They march in gangs to and from quarters. This strict supervision was developed to control the worst Blacks. They had to be inside their assigned shack by sundown, or be shot. Runaways were hunted with dogs.

A rough guess, 10% of slaves were murdered by slaves. As it was young males doing the killing, the highest value slaves, mostly they were sold down the river in chains. Chain gangs cutting cane was the final answer.

Reality is that which no matter what you think is still there. We have prisons full of people who killed because they did not like the way someone looked at them. Some did not like the way they looked at their dog. Killed three people in an armed robbery that netted $7. Killed the guy next door and his girlfriend for having sex, because he thought it was his girlfriend, then returned home to find his girlfriend, and so he killed her. Murdered his entire family on Christmas, because he did not get the present he wanted.

This is not Racism, Texas post their Death Row crimes on line. While whites are not quite as guilty, their crimes are just as dumb. When the trial lasts half a day, and the jury comes back in ten minutes with a finding of Guilty of Murder, three counts, Life without Parole three times, people do not respect your murder spree. Killed neighbor, stole toaster, killed neighbor, stole alarm clock.

Slavery, Human Bondage, also had a dark side. With Freedom, comes more Blacks in prison than existed during slavery. That is more than enough to form a chain gang from LA to New York.

This path we are on, Liberal, Homosexual, My Little Pony farting rainbows, is leading to having more in prison than the population of the USA at the end of slavery. As a Conservative, we cannot afford an economy based on Police, Courts, Prisons. Prison Industries do not provide the tax base.

As someone held personally responsible for all Racism, and told it is all my fault, I offer a deal, fully fund Black Education for two generations, and I will quit making fun of them and you.

I read once that freed blacks when they had the means were actually more likely to be slavers than their white counterparts, considering how small the % of the white population that owned slaves was I imagine the actual total amount of black slave owners to be even more minuscule in comparison but it makes sense considering that is the world they knew and came up in. Liberia was a country that was founded by the US as a colony for freed African slaves from the Americas and those freed slaves(which account for like 2-5% of the population) basically ran the country like some bizzaro version of the Antebellum South up until very recently denying the citizenship and voting rights to the indigenous Liberians.

Slavery was different in the north from the south because of economic differences, it wasn't profitable or possible to run those huge plantations in New England in big urban areas which had shipping and industry whereas it was King Cotton in the Confederacy. The non-cotton producing slave states that bordered the union didn't rebel since slavery was on its way out and trade with the north was more more important to them. Industrialists found out rather quick that it was more profitable to pay a disposable worker a wage than to own a slave that they have feed, house, and give medical care to. Slaves were not cheap, at sale today one slave would be the equivalent of around $20,000 and could be a lot more depending on other factors like what skills the slave might of had. It was not a cheap investment and not something most of the population was involved in, the big plantations(with more than 50 slaves) most of us think of when we think of slavery were few and far between and owned by a tiny ultra-wealthy fraction of the population making up less than 1%.

In the Southern US, the slave population increased, in Brazil and Haiti, it declined by 20% a year due to the slaves being worked to death, I guess.

My Extended Nurturing Model addresses these issues, but there are some who have an interest in the prison population increasing, despite the fact it's bad ethics.

I have just one question, and that is:

By what mechanism will homosexual relations cause an increase in prison population?

Yes, now that the empire has been built it demands to be sustained. It's the same as the "war on drugs" and in this case one feeds the other.

I'm not for funding anyone's f*****g education unless it's through the GI bill or some other program where they've actually earned it.

You are welcome to hold that position.

But i believe you and any children you have may suffer for it.

Whether or not you directly benefit from public education, the economic and social benefits can be huge.

Some day you are likely to be old and infirm and may rely on much younger people for your survival.

And that is just one example. Employers benefit from better educated workers. This pumps more money into the local economy.

I could go on.

Be stingy - i am just saying it might be more expensive than you think.

White people were never behind slavery, Jewish supremacists (the Jewish supremacists cowardly hide behind the majority of the Jews) are the ones who are behind slavery.
