While I'm sure a lot of people will hate the woo-woo in this article there is something here worth reading about, and I've seen it before particularly in discussions of Russian and former USSR satellite state politics. I think Europeans who want to consider themselves as being on top of the clashes of culture and ideas will want to know at least a little about who Rene Guenon and Julius Evola were, what their ideas were, and what Traditionalism means in the context of modern politics. It seems to be on it's way to being a notable force in political ideology.

Well, this BS is basically the same as the Nazi idea of aryanism, which was used to define what is and isn't german- as before 1848, there was no such thing as "german".
But as the trend back then was going towards nation states, the germans wanted a mystical origin story for themselves and found it in the language studies of the brother's grimm, pointing towards south asia (proto-indoeuropean).
Which is where they got their swastika from.

Anyway. I hardly believe a mysticized origin story is capable of convincing too many of the people who grew up in the Europe of the EU. Yes, those immigrants came to take our jobs, bur really, we'd rather be hip graphic-designers in berlin anyway.

I think this more likely to just manifest itself in what seem like strange decisions by some party leaders without knowing the fuel for the context. Particularly if they go the Guenon route it's much less a racial tradition story and more of one that says that modernity is destroying the earth as well as the integrity of the people that take part in it - something I'm sure a lot of people can relate to particularly if it hasn't served them well (although I'd agree that we wouldn't be likely to see a political party based on this stuff, more likely it'll end up augmenting the politics of some parties).

This was one of the earlier places I saw this, an article about Aleksandr Dugin who's apparently something of a Russian media mogul:

hmm. I have little idea of what's going on in russia. I could imagine mystic traditionalism as a vehicle for fascist power there, but that is based on prejudice only.

I fear not that "modernity" itself will be seriously attacked. Postmodernity- yes. But traditionalism is out of luck for the last generation to have experienced premodern traditions in europe was that of my great-great grandfather, maybe even great³ grandfather.
eastern and south easten europe maybe different, but the very idea of untangling globalization would have to go hand in hand with very dark times.

I mean, even the moderately right wing bavarian christian conservative party which had bavaria in a stranglehold since ww2 advertises itself as open to the world and pro tech. their slogan used to be "laptop and lederhosen".
right now, if any bavarian were asked to decide between either, 99% would go for the laptop.

disenfranchised romania, homeland of dracula, has the highest broadband coverage in europe.

so... Nationalism is returning, strong, which is scaryenough, but mystic traditionalism is a step 150 years into the past.... (it was already a step 70 years into the pre-modern past when the Nazis went for it)

Inward subjective probing in something left far away from politics. Having orders that people can join for mystery education is fine, just that whenever someone tries to make a particular order's ideas public policy it's as draconian and dumb an idea as making conservative Christianity or Islam public policy.
