If Trump really wants to unite the country then why this?

Why does he pick people he knows will cause further division starting with his vice president? He doesn't really seem to care about uniting the country like he claims. Actions speak louder than words.

I suppose because he figures he can have it both ways - putting the American people's fears to rest, but all the while he's paying back the thugs and bigots who got him elected. I don't think it's going to work.

I guess he wants to unite the racists with the non-racists. Not sure how well that is going to go over. Trump had to pander to racists and misogynists in order to win. If he had disavowed all the bigots who supported him he likely would have lost IMO. Now he's in the uncomfortable position of having to either stay true to his word or risk losing the support of a large percentage of his base.

Notice how he implies in interviews that he doesn't regret any of his actions because the ends justified the means. I'm hoping that Trump is more reasonable than his campaign would suggest. He's free to flip-flop on all his decisions if he chooses to now that he's elected.

What Trump will need to unite is all the firefighters around Washington DC when the White House goes up in flames.
