I most definitely see your point here, but that's a lot of people to lock up. I don't think people should be locked up for simply believing in something that can't be proved, but I do think extremists should be locked up. Those who want to kill abortion docs or infidels have no business being free, the safety of other people matter more.
Those who don't let their belief take over hand, or maybe just find comfort in it, I see nothing wrong with that. (I*m an atheist by the way).
People who would be violent over their belief or force their opinion on someone else, are a problem (and not just when it comes to religion).
