This question has been sitting at the back of my mind for awhile now, and I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me with an answer.

Why does the U.K. have a Queen? I mean, you have (had) Tony Blair and the Parliament and all of that - don't they run the country, decide the laws, make the policies? What does the Queen and her royal family actually do? And I mean apart from give the tabloids endless, pathetic crap to write about.

I also heard that taxpayers pay for their trips around the world and stays in 5 star hotels.

However, I shall withhold my wrath until I get an answer or two.

Thanks.

Hi,

I live in the uk and i no longer see why england needs a monarchy, the days when the monarchy ruled the country and are long gone. The goverment make all the decisions now( not always so well)because when the monarchy did rule they took care of their own and it was f*** you to everyone else, which was most of the country. I think the royal family are fine for going to other countries to say Hi on behalf of the uk and for the tourists but i would not be sorry to see them go. As for the taxes being spent on them i think it works out at less than £1.00 a year for each taxpayer.

Feel free to vent your wrath now. LOL

The only real reason we still have them is that they are a decent tourist attraction and tourism = money.
But screw all that, I still think the monarchy should be abolished. No one else seems to want a revolution though.

I reckon we should evict them and then turn the whole of Buckingham Palace into a really awesome museum.

Or as housing for the homeless. I'm sure the 4000 rooms would provide adequate space.

That's what I said to someone last year. It's ridiculous that there's somewhere like that for them, yet there are plenty of people in London who don't even have a proper home.
I can't believe in 2007 we still have an unelected head of state.

A few years ago over here we took a vote on whether or not to be separated from the U.K.
I can't believe we chose to stay tied to the Monarchy. They're a relic from a past era. I think it's time to let go (for us and for you).

I agree. I'm surprised either of us still put up with it.

I wonder what the reasons are though. The feeling of security and comfort by holding to old traditions? I really can't understand any reasonable need for them. They would certainly generate alot of money via the press and tourism etc.

The only sensible reason I can think of would be tourism. But with the regular public, I think it has a lot to do with tradition. Maybe in a few years this will change though. It seems that most monarchists are older people.

As a Unionist I am proud of our monarchy. It doesn't do us any harm and does us a fair bit of good. Better than becoming a republic. :)

God save the Queen!

I hate the phrase 'God Save The Queen'...
Religion and monarchy in just four words... I'd much rather we were a Republic.
