Organizers of New York City's Puerto Rican Day parade are sticking with their decision to honor a freed militant who once embraced armed resistance to U.S. rule of Puerto Rico, despite a promised boycott by Hispanic police officers and criticism from salsa star Willie Colon.
New York Police Commissioner James O'Neill on Monday became the latest person to say he wouldn't march in the parade because of the decision to recognize Oscar Lopez Rivera, who served decades in prison for his involvement in The Armed Forces of National Liberation, or FALN.
During the 1970s and 1980s, FALN claimed responsibility for more than 100 bombings in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, including a blast that killed four people at New York's historic Fraunces Tavern in 1975.
Lopez Rivera wasn't convicted in any of the bombings, but a former FALN member testified that he instructed members on how to make bombs. He served 35 years until his sentence was commuted by President Barack Obama.

"Militant"? The man testified in court he instructed people how to make bombs. Mainstream media, when are you going to get it into your heads that Radical Islamic Terrorism while probably the biggest threat at the moment is not the only type of terrorism. And you are confused that people know you live in a bubble?
It was not always this way.
F.A.L.N. PUERTO RICAN TERRORISTS SUSPECTED IN NEW YEAR BOMBINGS
That is correct not only did the NY Times call them terrorists back in '83 but "Puerto Rican Terroists". They were not worried about offending people. OMG
Quote:
The blasts, which struck Police Headquarters and two Federal office buildings in Manhattan and the Federal Courthouse in Brooklyn during a 90-minute period, severed a leg of one officer and injured the eyes of two bomb squad detectives.
The detectives, one of whom also lost all the fingers on his right hand and may have been deafened, were felled when one of the bombs blew up in their faces. They might have been killed had they not been wearing armored suits, the police said. A fifth bomb, made of four sticks of dynamite, was found in lower Manhattan and dismantled before it exploded

The '70's quite liberal Washington Post was politically incorrect back in the day.
One Killed as Bombs Disrupt New York - August 4, 1977
Quote:
Terrorist bombs killed one person and injured six today, and threats of more explosions forced the evacuation of as many as 100,000 workers from Manhattan offices.
Police and firefighting squads raced to the scene as people poured into the streets from the threatened buildings in a steady rainfall, reducing all normal traffic to chaos.
Two bombs actually went off. The first was on the 21st floor of 342 Madison Ave., housing U.S. Defense Department security personnel.

Here we are 40 years later and the NYC government is honoring this "militant". Ahh progress.
