Funny, huh? - I wasn't awarethat American was one of those cultures argueing that underage marriage was part of their culture and demanded respect for their traditions.
But there is a serious problem: in civilized nations, do we respect the culture of a people, or do we value the rights of an individual higher, according to our standards?
I have no answer for this, but here in my European corner of the world, child marriage and forced marriage are obviously illegal, however, minorities practicing the latter exist - and protecting individuals from their families is what our police does - but it also does destroy the minority's culture.
personally, I'm on my, -western- side on this.

Nope....most people in America do not believe forced or child marriage is justified.

In the old days, maybe about 2-3 generations ago, many more adolescent girls married (usually) slightly older men than is the case now.

Marriage laws have changed drastically over the past 20 years or so.

I just watched that On Demand. I was more than a little shocked that all 50 states allow this in some form or another! Geez, and I thought this was something they only did in cracker red states!

Not like the old days. Many states require parental permission. Some even require permission by court action.
