Hey everyone, so here’s my first serious discussion on Wrong Planet’s Politics, Philosophy, and Religion forum. Once again I don’t want this to be a debate, but more of a serious discussion with a few debative posts here and there. I’m not good at debates, or at least not yet, maybe sometime in the future I will jump into a debate on here and see how things go.

Anyways, this morning an idea popped into my head that I had been thinking about a before in past, and I figured that today would be a good idea to discuss it here with everyone. What, I'm thinking about is -and some of you probably may have thought about and discussed this before- Endovelicus worship, that is, the worship of health and specifically instant-cures. There appears to be a belief in this day and age, that one can solve every problem that they have with the ease of a pill, rather than work hard to solve the problem, or realize that it's not really a problem at all, but merely something that can work with in a different way. On this site, we have the prime example of Aspergers and high-functioning Autism,* where the issues of social-skills and the like, can be overcome mostly with education and training rather than a pill. However, today's culture prefers a pill for this and many other issues, and has raised a whole host of questions and problems that I'd like to discuss here, so what do you think? Do you agree with my view/concern, that today's society worships instant-cures? Have you discussed this before, here or elsewhere? What issues do you see this idea causing or has already caused in today's culture?

*I used to be fiercely, opposed to the idea Aspergers needing a cure, now, while I still consider that, the idea of a need for a cure for Aspergers and people with high-functioning Autism (heavy emphasis on that!) as irrational and an unnecessary for the reasons stated above, I've now sort of stepped back from the issue and am looking at it more in relation to the bigger picture, namely, again, the above. Also, I've realized that, at least for the time being, there are few aspects of this conflict that are, again only the time being, above my pay-grade.

Well...

we may have become a society that "worships" quick cures via pills.

But our worship includes keeping in mind that the objects of our worship may cause....agitation, constipation, male lactation, thoughts of suicide, skin rash, a sudden urge to drink, a sudden urge to do drugs, a sudden urge to gamble, and...we cant worship while operating heavy machinery, and we cant handle broken pieces of the objects of worship if we are women who are pregnant, or might become pregnant...

That's true, people do have tendency to prefer brief solutions with longterm consequences.

It's tough for me to comment because I'm not used to the big issues in my life being things a pill or two can alleviate unless it's the Saturday morning catch-up sleep migraine.

At the first level people tend to go through cycles in their lives where different things have different weights and priorities and if something's noticeable enough to be annoying but not serious enough to dedicate resources to people tend to shush it under the carpet with pills. I think also a lot of people these days are busier than they've ever been so convenient free time to really get to the bottom of a problem and solve it correctly can be more challenging to allocate.

I suppose, then again, to say anything really useful or insightful on this though we'd need an actual specific issue. The general answers to general questions tend to be the boring stuff that anyone could have thought of.

That's true, the funny thing about my life at the moment is that it'll alternate between, me having a lot of time on my hands and struggling about finding things to do, and then struggling to get several things done, and having very little time to complete them all.
