Should polygamy be illegal?

Polygamy is currently an illegal practice in the US. Besides the "ick" factor I can't see the rationalization of not being able to have as many religious marriages as you like. I draw the line with legal marriage because that would be a nightmere for the government and lead to a lot of tax fraud. Speaking of which I never was much keen on the idea of married people getting tax benefits in the first place. In the eyes of the law we should all be "single".

Getting back to the purpose of the thread is polygamy such a danger to society that it must be illegalized?

Of course. Men and women can't handle each other one on one with respect, honor and sanctity - giving them free reign with multiple spouses? OMG just bring on WW3 why don't you?

no, it shouldn't. people should have as many sexual/intimate partners as they like. the whole idea of monogamy is rooted in religious thought, and should be done away with forthwith. monogamy is rare among mammals, and is not the natural state for us to exist in. which is why it causes the amount of trouble that it does. most birds, though, are monogamous, apparently.

Although polygamy in theory would allow women to marry as many men as they want, you would see far more men marrying women.

If you look at polygamist communities, it results in a small number of men hoarding all of the town's women, this of course drives out a large percentege of men looking for a mate. This in turn, creates disruptions in neighboring town as men become more and more agressive in search of mates and beging fighting over mating rights. Now take this, and multipy it bt 300,000,000 people and you can only guess at how much sociological damage will result.

In most successful religions, it has become illeagal. But now in aitheist sociaties like UK, NTs well have do what they feel. This is a lesser case for country like Japan.

I don't think it should be illegal as long as it's all consenting and involves people who are not underage.

Male humans are polygamous by nature....and maybe even the females. The only danger of polygamy is t a faster spread of STDs .

As long as all parties consent then no-one has a right to say squat, no victims no crimes, morality is subjective.
While we are at it in theory at least i would allow cannibalism between consenting adults.
The pre-Christian Irish practiced annual marriages and allowed any number of arrangements between people, this is where my heart resides.

That wasnt funny at all. But back to the topic technically there is exactly nothing wrong with polygamy (nowadays stds are more dangerous and risky, but besides that), or having feelings for one who is outside your species.

perhaps, but regardless, monogamy causes untold problems in modern societies. the fact the majority of marriages and long term relationships end in separation simply reinforces the fact. humans are not monogamous by nature.
