Dr. Anthony Fauci says chance of coronavirus vaccine being highly effective is ‘not great’
Quote:
White House coronavirus advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci that the chances of scientists creating a highly effective vaccine — one that provides 98% or more guaranteed protection — for the virus are slim.
Scientists are hoping for a coronavirus vaccine that is at least 75% effective, but 50% or 60% effective would be acceptable, too, he said.
The FDA has said it would authorize a coronavirus vaccine so long as it is safe and at least 50% effective.
One in Three Americans Would Not Get COVID-19 VaccineFor argument's sake, lets say vaccines are 60 percent effective and 1/3 of Americans don't take them. That means in 60 percent of the American public will not be protected. While it varies by disease it is estimated that
94 percent of the population must be immune to achieve herd immunity. We do not know how effective the vaccine will be nor how many people will refuse to take the vaccine. But it is very likely we won't come close to acheiving herd immunity. That means that while things will be less bad lockdowns, quarantines, social distancing will be a permanent part of our lives. In time out of necessity people mainly the younger generations especially the generations that will know of nothing else will make the adjustments so life and the economy won't be permanently stunted. Obviously in polarized societies like America might never adjust. China is the favorite to be the next dominant superpower at the moment but they have their flaws like a tendency to cover up problems.
