Dr. Anthony Fauci says chance of coronavirus vaccine being highly effective is ‘not great’

Quote:
White House coronavirus advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci that the chances of scientists creating a highly effective vaccine — one that provides 98% or more guaranteed protection — for the virus are slim.

Scientists are hoping for a coronavirus vaccine that is at least 75% effective, but 50% or 60% effective would be acceptable, too, he said.

The FDA has said it would authorize a coronavirus vaccine so long as it is safe and at least 50% effective.

One in Three Americans Would Not Get COVID-19 Vaccine

For argument's sake, lets say vaccines are 60 percent effective and 1/3 of Americans don't take them. That means in 60 percent of the American public will not be protected. While it varies by disease it is estimated that 94 percent of the population must be immune to achieve herd immunity. We do not know how effective the vaccine will be nor how many people will refuse to take the vaccine. But it is very likely we won't come close to acheiving herd immunity. That means that while things will be less bad lockdowns, quarantines, social distancing will be a permanent part of our lives. In time out of necessity people mainly the younger generations especially the generations that will know of nothing else will make the adjustments so life and the economy won't be permanently stunted. Obviously in polarized societies like America might never adjust. China is the favorite to be the next dominant superpower at the moment but they have their flaws like a tendency to cover up problems.

Would you want to be the first one to have injected into you something that was rushed into development?

Quote:
Working memory capacity predicts individual differences in social-distancing compliance during the COVID-19 pandemic
Xie et al. suggest that non-compliance is associated with limitations in people's mental capacity to simultaneously retain multiple pieces of information in working memory (WM) for rational decision making that leads to social-distancing compliance.:

Significance

Before vaccination and other intervention measures become available, successful containment of an unknown infectious disease critically relies on people’s voluntary compliance with the recommended social-distancing guidelines. This involves a decision process of prioritizing the merits of social distancing over its costs, which may depend on one’s ability to compare multiple pieces of potentially conflicting information regarding social distancing in working memory. Our data support this hypothesis, highlighting the critical role of one’s working memory capacity in social-distancing compliance during the early stage of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. This observation reveals a core cognitive limitation in one’s response to a public health crisis and suggests a possible cognitive venue for the development of strategies to mitigate this challenge.

There are three phases of vaccine tests.

The FDA wouldn’t put out a vaccine unless it’s proven as effective as the polio vaccine.

The FDA approves drugs all the time that later prove to be hazardous to one's health.

You are both correct.

Even the most effective vaccines are not perfect; either they have no effect in some people, they have side-effects in some people, they trigger allergic reactions in some people, or they cause death in some people.  Not everyone's body will react the same way to the same vaccine.

But if I have the choice of dying from COVID-19 or having an allergic reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine, I'll take the COVID-19 vaccine.

how about instead of hurriedly trying to come up with a vaccine, so we can go back to our business-as-usual of completely ruining the world and billions of people's lives in the process,

we actually deal with the bigger problems that led to mother nature deciding to rein us in and cull some of us in the first place.

oh wait that requires actual effort so it will never happen.
