Sometimes canceling a figure is the best punishment we can give.

My only thought to that was "uh by not posting anything controversial or political online under your real identity."
I was even surprised the quote was not even downvoted nor removed.

Someone probably realized that deleting a quote, ANY quote, on a discussion regarding ending cancel culture, would have looked stupid.
Kinda like when Mike Lindell went on that staged news parody to talk about cancel culture, but instead kept talking about "vooter frawld!! !", and they silenced him XD.
People who whine and bleat about "CaNcEl CuLtUrE" seem like they'd be upset if you stopped them from telling lies to strangers' kids in a public park, cos "how dare you tell me what I can or can't say!" and then would be equally baffled and outraged when they got fired from the daycare they work at.
By their logic, its CRUEL! to fire a restaurant worker for publicly talking about spitting in people's food.
You kinda get the impression that some people were raised by parents who never told then "no", and never punished them for anything.
Navy Wisdom: "Requesting permission to speak freely" is not to be done in front of the rest of the crew, unless you are about to say something nice. Otherwise, you may be passed over for commission or promotion, assigned to the bilge watch, given extra military training, transferred to the Deck Department, or denied leave and liberty when you really need it.
Canceled? Well ... let us just say that your re-enlistment request has been misplaced ...
Cancel culture is like banning someone from a village. But it is my peculiar understanding, from my inadequate research on Google (just a few lines from the Wikipedia page), that it's harder to treat with 'cancel culture' (hence therefore using the term CC for the rest of this post) a group of individuals if that group themselves practice CC.
CC would never get the CC treatment. Some people can get easily offended. Is CC the new stealth, PC term for HF ?
*acronyms used to prevent innuendos)
CCing the corrupted politicians, ça va de soi. But...
You cannot please everyone. CCing someone because 'fist strike was the last chance' is weird in a free society with open minds. As I said, my research is inadequate.
This was my critic of CC. To make the first part more concise, now using CCC...
I would like to pretend that CC could make for more gregarious society, with nicer neighborhoods, and more collaboration between citizens from the same parts of a town. But...
Weaponizing CC WILL make the potential for the greater good of CC just a tool for some people for revenge, yes ? Then CCC would act as a shield against these perverts of the CC. I call then CCCP, so there it is...
In Soviet Russia (old reddit meme), CCCP is not about autodestruction.
(I tried to be absurd)
I feel like it would be instructive if someone read about the "Cultural Revolution" of the 1960s in Communist China---and, especially, the "Red Guards."
This was "cancel culture" on steroids.
Even worse, of course, was Cambodia with Pol Pot.
If anyone is within a "cancel culture" situation, that person probably feels little joy in life.

There has always been censorship of the self kind and the community kind. Cancel Culture does not refer to singular acts of censorship but as the name implies a societal phenomenon. Cancel Culture is based on presentism and moral perfectionism. When deciding who is to be canceled neither context or nuance are allowed to be factored in. Cancel Culture differs from past censorship campaigns in this respect. The goal of many past censorship campaigns was to make people forget the canceled person or world view ever existed. The current campaigns seek not only to deplatform but to make sure not for one second let you forget how evil the deplatformed idea or person is or was. Social media probably has a lot to do with this.

I was very ardently/passionately anti cancel culture some time ago because I saw how it lead to the suicides of a couple individuals who definitely didn't deserve it, due to relentless bullying online. This was a sentiment I held around half a year or so ago and I stand firmly by those views today.
However I have to wonder at times what the mentality of people who are against CC is. Are they like me where they see the harm that comes with the relentless harassment people receive often over an opinion or a trivial mistake? Or do they espouse harmful views themselves, and wish to defend harmful behavior?
With social media comes great responsibility. Sites like Twitter are a relatively new phenomenon and can lead to great happiness as well as great misery, so personal responsibility and self awareness is very crucial - especially as a public figure.
Online trolls are generally sociopaths or psychopaths and curiously people who are classified as "woke" are usually the biggest targets of trolls who are enthusiastically encouraged by right wing political types.
For example teen Greta Thunberg has been targeted by thousands of adult males including right wing media shock jocks who have made inappropriate comments about her autism, her sexuality and other comments aimed at cancelling her views on climate change.,
The next most common group are online bullies who the most common reason for suicide. These deplorables tend to be alphas in their school or community and their victims are harmless or vulnerable people. The number of teens who commit suicide as a result of online bullying is quite prevelant and a serious global issue. Nothing is ever done to make the bullies accountable for their actions because they tend to be drawn from the elite of society.
So now we come to so called "cancel-culture" wokes". In the scheme of things these are the least most dangerous and the ones who are propped up by the right wing media as the greatest danger to civilisation. Try and find evidence where woke activists (or woketivists) as they are labelled have actually caused the demise of our society or civilisation. Learn for yourself rather than listen to the opinions on tabloids.

Sounds like a right winger inciting trouble.

How so? I was surprised that answer was even there because that sounded like something a leftist would say.

An old trick used by right wingers to smear the left online. I smell fraud when I read the post.

Both.
A prime example of the latter occurred yesterday when the lawyer defending Trump accused the prosecution of “Constitutional Cancel Culture”. Every time this happens it is a propaganda victory for cancel culture proponents. It hurts the credibility of those of us against cancel culture due to guilt by association. People do not listen to our arguments because what they think they see is us justifying our racism.

If you were taught X is true, but learned through experience Y is true, ideally you'll change your opinion to Y is true.
If people find out you once said X is true, but Y is the more accepted answer, and people try to "cancel culture" you because of your former opinion, you can just say "I've learned Y is true, I was wrong about X is true."
The irony of people complaining about cancel culture is that they aren't willing to listen/hear/understand new perspectives/opinions--so they blame everyone but themselves for their unwillingness to observe reality.
To say that a different way: people who are mad at cancel culture are people who want to continue thinking wrongly. It's really not that hard: don't be an ignoramus, be open to new information, grow intellectually with those around you.
Or, learn something once--no matter how wrong that lesson is--and defend that opinion without ever being open to the possibility you're wrong. (This is where "cancel culture" stomps you into the dirt, because you have bad ideas and refuse to accept that reality)
