Mike Pence is starting a podcast

Quote:
Mike Pence is returning to his radio roots after a 22-year hiatus from the airwaves.

The former vice president will launch a podcast in the coming months hosted by the Young America’s Foundation, a conservative youth organization dating back to the1960s. Pence will join YAF as the group’s first Ronald Reagan presidential scholar, and is expected to become a regular member of its campus lecture circuit once it is safe to resume such events, which have been halted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Thursday, Pence announced that he would join the Heritage Foundation, another conservative institution, as a distinguished visiting fellow focused on public policy.

Hosting a podcast won’t be an entirely new venture for Pence, who is 61. A former Indiana governor, he spent a decade prior to his 2000 election to Congress as a prominent conservative radio personality in the Midwest — a trade he then used to launch his political career. His YAF-sponsored show, which will be aimed at a younger audience than the listeners he drew years ago on “The Mike Pence Show,” is similar to an arrangement the conservative youth group had with Reagan, then the governor of California, when YAF served as a sponsor for his daily radio commentary in the mid-1970s.

Pence is also said to be eyeing a potential book deal, and has plans to create a new fundraising committee that would serve as his main conduit to Republican donors as he works to boost House and Senate GOP candidates in the 2022 midterm elections and weighs a future presidential bid of his own in 2024.

The former vice president, who recently returned from a post-White House vacation to the Caribbean island of Saint Croix, is currently living in the Washington suburbs with plans to keep a presence in both D.C. and his home state of Indiana moving forward.

The fact that someone produces a podcast does not mandate that everyone should listen to it.

Now let's see what his opinion about Trump will be. Is he going to follow the right wing of his party and call Trump the greatest President America has ever known, as well as the genetic pinnacle of manhood? Or will he remember how Trump had almost gotten him lynched?

Interesting.

What would you do if you were in Pence's shoes?

If Trump gets through impeachment without being reprimanded (which seems likely), and is NOT barred from running for office again then Trump might run for POTUS again in 2024. And conceivably Pence could be his running mate again.

But would he seriously want to be? As he showed backbone with refusing to call the election in Biden's favor (which is just ceremonial, anyhow), I doubt Trump would want him back, and neither would the Trump cultists who had wanted to lynch him. And it's been widely known how Pence has had the Presidential bug for some time, so I doubt he's going to accept the number two spot, again.

True.

Pence might end up a rival of Trump in 2024.

I guess what am wondering about is "what would I do if were any GOP politician (congressman or senator) at this point?".

You would have to find some way to "have your cake and eat it too" by trying to keep the Trump base, but distancing yourself from Trump the man after what he did in the last few weeks. What you might do to achieve that is to concoct a narrative in which you're loyal to "Trumpism" (what the guy stood for), but believe that "Trump (the man) sadly went round the bend in the last few weeks - so we have to put him into a home - like he is our beloved, but now demented parent- but...were gonna stay loyal to the movement he started!".

Didn't this guy actually have a talk show in the 90s? Sounds like he's making a comeback.

I'm not sure how to process this. I don't like the guy. In some ways he's worse than Trump (His political views are pretty damn extreme) and in some ways better (he appears to be less of an overt borderline sociopath).

He did, indeed. I have to imagine him as being the milquetoast equivalent of Rush Limbaugh.

This is why, even as a good liberal and leftie person, I was not in favor of Trump’s first impeachment (for trying to bend our country’s foreign policy to get a personal favor from Ukraine). The Senate trial happened about a year ago.

I did not want a right-wing guy like Pence to get a honeymoon period! And that was basically my reasoning. :jester:
