This poll is not asking how much land he will take but his long term goal.

In terms of territory, old USSR + some fringes with large Russian populations.

In terms of influence, old Warsaw Pact. He wants Poland, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria to be Russian allies rather than NATO members.

As his endgame? Unlikely. I think no one has a war as an endgame.

None of the above.

Putin prefers independent puppet states.

people seem to be ignoring the fact that history seems to be rhyming here, with pooootin's justification for taking ukraine similar to hitler's justification for taking the Sudetenland and stalin's justification for attempting to take finland.

You use this term again. Apparently, you didn't get the irony of your own words.

I do. A separate country with its own borders on the surface, but completely politically and economically externally controlled. I didn't say that it's a wonderful thing.

Attaching territory is too high of a political price in the post-war world. Plus you have to give those people things like citizenship, (some) rights, benefits like retirement and healthcare, etc. In an independent state you don't have to do any of that. That's exactly what Putin prefers. If Putin is able to install a compliant government in Ukraine he likely won't bother trying to absorb it into Russia.

Again, I look at the subject from a neutral point of view to understand motivations.

Let's not be hypocritical and use the real name: dependent puppet states.

Putin prefers a sphere of influence rather than annexation. I think he understands that many of the USSR's problems stemmed from being too heavy-handed and controlling of other Warsaw pact nations.

Before Putin wants anything else, Putin wants access to the Black Sea and a southern neighbor who will not challenge it in international affairs. Anything beyond that is speculation. I'm not sure who would be next on the chopping block once Putin has settled the Ukraine issue how he pleases. Perhaps he will decide that Turkey needs to be persuaded to never, ever threaten to close the Bosporus to Russian ships.

Putin has probably assured Finland will attempt to join NATO, Sweden will likely follow.

To begin by regaining the rights that were taken away to russian-born people, without any personal input and not even being in the country during the events. Trump, and now Putin, has been trying to get rid of the deep state who profited off the pandemic, but the mainstream media keeps only showing one side of the story.
