I find it interesting that in spite of the fact that we claim to be a Christian Nation "Under God" our founding fathers had been using pagan symbolism for our national identity dating back to the Colonial days.

Columbia is obviously more a symbol of America than an object of true worship though. But she has an interestint history about her as she is a young goddess unique to The New World.

And she shares a spot with Libertas aka "Lady Liberty", an actual Roman Goddess who is also incorporated into American values (and she appears in French art and in their cultural symbolism too).

Anyways here's some interesting articles about Columbia's connections to paganism and the occult.

And while Columbia no doubt had some very racist roots in her creation, there were those who took a different approach to the American Goddess as a symbol of equality and fairness for everyone in this country no matter their race.

Like in these two very old political cartoons I admire that show her defending a Chinese immigrant from a white lynch mob and demanding equal recognition for a wounded black veteran who fought for the Union during the American Civil War.
