Texas A&M baseball player shot by stray bullet during game, police say

Quote:
A college baseball player for Texas A&M-Texarkana was struck by a stray bullet in the middle of a game on Saturday, according to local police and the university.

The 18-year-old player was hit at about 5:30 p.m. while standing in the bullpen area at the game against the University of Houston–Victoria at George Dobson Field at Spring Lake Park in Texarkana, a city on the border of Arkansas, the Texarkana Police Department said in a Facebook post.

The stray bullet appeared to come from "some type of altercation in a nearby neighborhood to the west of the park," according to police.

The player, whose identity has not been released, was in stable condition as of Saturday night after being transported to Christus St. Michael Hospital, according to a social media post from the university. The police department said in its Saturday night announcement of the incident that the player was going into surgery.

It's bad enough getting hit by a stray ball. 8O

I wonder what the likelihood is of getting hit by a stray bullet in America. I wonder if it's closer to the likelihood of getting hit by lightning, or closer to the likelihood of getting hit by a car.

:chin: Perhaps there's a business opportunity here. Bulletproof baseball uniforms! And a whole line of bulletproof school uniforms, Sunday church clothes, mall shopping casual wear etc - you know, all the normal places where people get shot at all the time.

Only half kidding, too. This s**t isn't stopping any time soon and what was once the fashion of Columbian drug lords - fancy bulletproof suits like the kind in John Wick 4, there's going to be a insatiable demand for from well to do Americans who don't want to have to utilize their top tier healthcare plans to stitch up gsw's if they can avoid the whole thing by simply switching their wardrobe from blue jeans & white t-shirts to the latest in ballistic chic fast fashion!

My guess is the latter. It's a seemingly regular occurrence that people get hit by stray bullets whereas it's almost never that people get hit by lightning. Hard to say which one it's nearer to, though.. but I'm guessing getting hit by a car - especially since guns are now the leading cause of death in children, overtaking car accidents. Mind you, most of those aren't likely stray bullets.. they hit and killed who they were intended for.

Well I know you were half-kidding but there's a lot of sites selling bullet proof vests and clothing to people now. However you have to be really careful to match the vest with the threat. A bullet proof vest rated for 9mm wont stop a 5.56x45 and a 7.62x39mm rated vest wont stop a .308 Winchester.

Another interesting thing about American culture and laws.

It’s only legal to buy body armour in Canada if you have a firearms licence. And then you have to carry the licence on you while wearing or transporting the body armour. But you can’t just go to a store and buy it for protection as a civilian without a gun permit.

Pretty sure this is to prevent gangsters from having body armour which would embolden them in shootouts with each other and law enforcement. We also don’t go around shooting each other like Americans so people don’t have the same desire to suit up.
