I think there’s more support for Jesus being the Son of God in the Bible, but I think the Bible is mostly fictional - historical fiction, perhaps. I also think of some of it as tall tales that got bigger and bigger with the retelling until it was written down.

Depends on which religion you’re talking about. Christianity would say yes, as Father, Son and the Holy Ghost are one and the same. In the Islamic religion he was just another prophet.

No, Jesus was a man if he existed at all.

He was god ....and the one same god as "the father"...but they werent the same...cause some things are not even known to the son, only to father, like the final hour.

Be that as it may...God sacrificed his one son so...we would learn to be nice each other.

This lowly schmuck carpenter guy is actually my son...so you all messed up!

But according to Kurt Vonnegut...the human race got the wrong message and interpreted the lesson as being "dont mess with folks who are well connected".

So Vonnegut proposed an improved gospel in which Jesus wasnt born God's son and really was just a low class tradesman who got crucified...but then as he was being crucified God appears and ADOPTS him as his son on the spot.

Decades later I was reading about the early competing forms of Christianity in late antiquity. The forms of Christianity ranged from the Arians who believed that Jesus was just a mortal man who was a prophet of God to the forerunners of the Orthodox who held that he was the son of God. And actually there even WAS a splinter group who believed that Christ was the adopted son of God and not born with that status. So Vonnegut wasnt being as edgy and original as I thought he was being in his proposal made two thousand years later.

If you start asking questions, the whole thing kind of falls apart.

It makes zero sense for Jesus to also be his own dad because how is he then sacrificing his only son for our sins? That's him offing himself to save us from his own punishment for the original sin.

Personally, I don't buy into it, but wasn't it mostly Catholics that buy that Trinity BS. I'm not completely convinced that Catholics are still Christians because of things like that and completely made up stuff like purgatory. If they are, they're terrible biblical scholars.

I can't really say that I care either way, the whole thing is a mess.

As a kid I always thought of Jesus and God as being separate beings and Jesus often referred to God as if he were someone else. If they are different, doesn't this make Christians polytheists?

Personally them being separate beings makes more sense to me than them being one and the same.

There is more support for them being separate in the Bible. I consider Christianity polytheistic with a clear godhead. There are lots of divinities: God, Jesus, Satan, angels, demons, and saints (if you're Catholic).

God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are all facets of the same person.

This model works for many:

• God the Father is the mind and soul of God.

• God the Son is the physical body of God.

• God the Holy Spirit is the will and personality of God.

If this model does not work for you, then . . . not my problem.
