The world's gone nutso...so ...we should escape to the stars?

Kinda like saying "the paranoids are all out to get me".

Its...not hard to persuade me...that the world has gone nutso in the last few years.

And the Net is a part of it. Much of what he said makes sense.

But implying that we need "go to the stars" ( by that I assume he means get into space craft and colonize exoplanets) seems a bit nutso itself.

…except this is Exactly what’s been playing out in real life the last several years.

Elon Musk’s stated goal is to make humanity a star faring species. That’s why SpaceX exists. That’s why he’s made it a goal to colonize Mara. He figures we have something like 100 years to start blasting off the planet with massive ships carry huge payloads of people and raw materials to start colonizing the stars. He figures in a hundred years or so we’ll have f****d this planet up so hard we’ll need to start leaving for survival.. but even if it weren’t for manmade climate change, he figured we’d eventually have to head off into the stars because if we all stay here we all die here - no species has survived Forever on the Earth. Eventually we might die off on Earth, but if we’ve colonized other planets then we have A chance of survival beyond our time here.

Colonizers are nothing but trouble.
I hope we get the hell zapped out of us if we try that.
We already tore this planet up, we don’t deserve another one.
Stop the spread.

When has any species, from the microscopic to the gargantuan, ever stopped expanding its territory before meeting mortal constraints?

Everything keeps going as far as it can without dying and only stops spreading when something will kill it if it does.

We are not going to be able to even do a Buzz Aldrin (have one person walk) on a planet outside of our solar system within this century. In fact we wont even be able to land a robot rover on the surface of body in another solar system that soon.

Much less be able to resettle millions of people to pioneer settlements around other stars.

If Elon says we are going to do it that soon then he is cuckoo for coco puffs!

SOME day in some future century maybe. But not within this century.

I hope aliens kill us before we spread .
I use Lysol to kill germs, no idea what they sterilize with but I hope it’s strong.

I've heard people better in the scientific know than myself that even a wrecked Earth is far easier to fix than trying to build civilization on Mars. Maybe AI will help but we'd need some radically new approaches that make all of this cost-effective, like maybe automated mining, equipment repair, and construction on the moon. We'd need to get something there ahead of us.

An interview of Stephen Hawking conducted by Neil deGrasse Tyson came on my fb stream today and I listened to it. Stephen Hawking said the exact same thing - we have to spread to the stars as a multi-planetary species or we all die here. Also points out that nuclear war, climate change, global warming etc are all bigger threats than getting hit by an asteroid.

So Elon’s just recycling Stephen Hawkings views. But still.. science needs have been saying for years, maybe decades, that our goal should be to colonize space. Hard to ignore that.

You dont understand what Hawkings said.

He thinks that by a million years from now we should have our eggs in more than one cosmic basket. But he knows we cant do significant colonization, even within our own solar system, in the next couple of decades.

We are not going to set foot on a planet outside of our solar system within the 21st Century.

Much less "colonize" any exoplanets.

Within our solar system it might start to happen. It wont reduce numbers of people on Earth.

Solving global warming on earth would be easier than colonizing other planets.

And as Carl Sagan said "the worst spot in Antarctica is FAR better than the best spot on Mars".

Neil DeGrasse also states the obvious over and over...that fixing Earth is a zillion times easier than terraforming Mars.

I understand what he said just fine. He said it in plain English.

It’s Elon Musk that’s put a century or so timeline on the world heating up so hot we’d better have figured out how to send some of us star-ward.

The thing that will stop humans going out into the stars is the limit of our own human bodies. We are not strong enough to withstand anything that space throws at us. We will need to become cyborgs to withstand space.

If billions of humans go off into space, most of us will die of either: the physical strain space puts on our bodies; alien diseases; meeting other lifeforms who will harm us; equipment failure (e.g. space suit rupture); mechanical equipment crushing us; lack of food and water.

Human bodies are very weak and easily damaged. We'd have to prioritise studying and perfecting cyborg technology before we go into the universe.

This is a big part of why a lot of people would consider Mars colonization a publicity stunt, add a heavy dose of perchlorates on the surface that would need to be leached out of the regolith for it to be usable. I think we'd need some genetic enhancement that reinforces and augments muscle and bone as well as nanobots that can detect and patch DNA damage on the fly as we'll be getting bombarded with gamma radiation.

Like I said ..if ol Elon said that then he is cuckoo for cocoa puffs.

If I am taking him too literally and he didnt really mean "the stars" ( he didnt mean interstellar space) and that he meant just colonizing within our own solar system in the next century then its less impossible. But still impossible to colonize on a scale that would solve any problem on earth in the coming century.

If we do colonize it will probably mainly be by way of O'Neil type space colonies that float above planets at laGrange points, and not primarly via building settlements on the planetary surfaces.

Better fix what we have before we mess something else up.
Giving us another planet would be like giving the spoiled brat that broke a toy on purpose another toy.

Oh yes I forgot about radiation, that's a major obstacle too! We'd need to find a way to prevent or cure that. Sci fi shows always have some miracle cure for radiation e.g. Star Trek.
