Do you you agree or disagree with the following statement?

"Donald Trump knows nothing about service to anyone or anything but himself.  For him to insult Medal of Honor recipients, just as he has previously attacked Gold Star families, mocked prisoners of war, and referred to those who lost their lives in service to our country as 'suckers' and 'losers', should remind all Americans that we owe it to our service members, our country, and our future to make sure Donald Trump is never our nation's commander in chief again.  Donald Trump hates Veterans and their sacrifice, because he looks so small in comparison to them."

You may vote for only one option, but you may change your vote at any time.

Please keep the discussions civil, omitting profanity and personal attacks against other WP members.

Thank you for your participation.

I don't know who Mr Bonespur is. I assume he's the person who wrote that blurb. I'd have to fact-check to make sure Trump said all of those things and why / the context, not that any of it can be justified if it was said.

Until then I have no opinion, except that it's disgraceful for anyone to mock or insult veterans.

I say yes it is all true, I think sorry the poll options were a little confusing....so to specify I mean trump being an as*hole towards veterens is true. Idk I am not super pro military or anything, but f*****g hell I'd never call veterans suckers and losers or push for denying them better healthcare like Donald Rump did.

"Mr. Bonespur" is Mr. Trump, and refers to the alleged bone spur in his foot that got him a draft deferment, because if you have a bone spur you cannot do any marching.

But apparently, his alleged bone spur has never kept him from playing 18 holes (or more) of golf or engaging in other activities that require walking.  The alleged bone spur also seems to have "miraculously" disappeared soon after he became too old to be drafted.

In my opinion, veterans -- especially those of us injured or disabled in the line of duty -- make Mr. Trump seem cowardly, and thus less "Manly", so he compensates by calling is suckers and losers.

Obviously true

Angering vets, Trump says civilian award is 'much better' than Medal of Honor

Quote:
Veterans rebuked former President Donald Trump this weekend for saying the Presidential Medal of Freedom is "much better" than the military Medal of Honor because recipients of the latter are often badly wounded or dead.

"These asinine comments not only diminish the significance of our nation’s highest award for valor, but also crassly characterizes the sacrifices of those who have risked their lives above and beyond the call of duty," said a statement from Al Lipphardt, national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Trump made the comments during a campaign event Thursday at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, as talked about awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Dr. Miriam Adelson, a physician, philanthrophist, and prominent Republican Party donor.

“It’s actually much better, because everyone gets the Congressional Medal of Honor, that’s soldiers ‒ they’re either in very bad shape, because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets, or they’re dead,” Trump said.

The late-billionaire Sheldon Adelson and his wife Dr. Miriam Adelson (front row) watch Donald Trump arrive at his presidential inauguration in 2017.

Adelson is the widow of the late casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, also a major GOP donor.

Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said that Trump's "repeated pattern of disgraceful insults about wounded warriors and their families is outrageous and a national embarrassment. Someone who repeatedly belittles our military men and women and mocks wounded soldiers isn’t fit to be Commander-in-Chief."

I did not vote for the first option, because I have seen allegations I don't think are true, for example people have accused him of being antisemitic, which I seriously doubt. It has also been said that he is a staunch supporter of Project 2025, but has actually tried to distance himself from that, as he knows it includes provisions a lot of his supporters wouldn't like i.e. Trump voters seem to largely not want to be told what to do in their private lives, and Project 2025 is rather authoritarian in that regard, as I understand it.

But as for the disrespect towards veterans, yes I totally agree.

But I wish someone could explain to me why mainstream US citizens are so in love with him.

I don't think Trump wants to put Ivanka and Jared in camps, but I do think he has been antisemitic at times.

Remember that a large portion of people hold at least one antisemitic view without being Nazis. Antisemitism is mostly mundane.

I do think accusing Jews of hating their religion if they vote Democrat is antisemitic. I think tying Judaism so closely with Israel (the two are often tight for many Jews, but they needn't be) is antisemitic: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/202 ... c-comments

I also think Trump's constant buddy-buddy nature with antisemites - Steve Bannon, Kanye West, Nick Fuentes, and calling people chanting "Jews will not replace us" very fine people - at the very least shows a blasé nature towards antisemitism.

My pap was never drafted (as in never picked or chosen, not draft evasion). I'd hate to find out about Trump's opinion towards that.

It's possible to make insensitive remarks on matters that concern Jews, without being antisemitic. I can guarantee you that many Jews consider particularly strident critiques of Zionism to be antisemitic, yet we refuse to agree with that. The Guardian seem to see Trump's behavior as antisemitic. I happen to disagree, even though I have very little respect for him in general.

Does it really matter if Trump does and says those things out of prejudice or for purely political reasons? The harm done is the same.
