Trump says he will vote yes on Florida ballot measure to legalize marijuana

Quote:
Former President Donald Trump said he plans to vote yes on a ballot measure in Florida to legalize marijuana, his clearest stance so far on the issue.

“As I have previously stated, I believe it is time to end needless arrests and incarcerations of adults for small amounts of marijuana for personal use,” the former president wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform late Sunday night.

He added, “We must also implement smart regulations, while providing access for adults, to safe, tested product. As a Floridian, I will be voting YES on Amendment 3 this November.”

Trump said that if elected, his administration “will continue to focus on research to unlock the medical uses of marijuana to a Schedule 3 drug, and work with Congress to pass common sense laws, including safe banking for state authorized companies, and supporting states rights to pass marijuana laws, like in Florida, that work so well for their citizens.”

If passed, the ballot measure would permit residents over 21 to possess, buy or consume marijuana recreationally. Medical marijuana is already legal in Florida.

Trump's support for the ballot measure is the clearest indication he has given about his stance on the issue of marijuana legalization and one that puts him at odds with other Republicans. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis opposes the marijuana ballot measure and most congressional Republicans have in recent years voted against bills to reform U.S. policy on marijuana.

The former president has in the past given mixed messages on marijuana legalization when pressed on the issue in the past. During his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump said he was in favor of cannabis use for medicinal purposes and that more research should be done on its health benefits. He has also repeatedly stated that each state should decide whether to legalize marijuana.

In an interview with Newsmax TV last year, Trump acknowledged that the issue of marijuana legalization is a “pretty popular thing” among voters, but also expressed skepticism over marijuana use as a treatment to help people.

The Trump administration took several actions against recreational marijuana possession and use, including reversing an Obama-era policy on marijuana that directed federal prosecutors against pursuing marijuana-related cases in states that have legalized the drug.

But nothing he's said to date has been true. Sounds like a party contradiction to me.

Personally I don't smoke pot anymore but I do believe that each person has the right to decide that for themselves. The same applies to alcohol; I don't drink but I don't want someone telling me I can't. If I don't hurt anyone it's all about personal freedom to live my life as I want. At the same time I don't forget that this is the person who wants to criminalize other personal freedoms with project 2025 which is why I feel this info was "conveniently" leaked as a campaign stunt.

Of course, it is gloaming on to a popular opinion.

There's a certain amount of acknowledgment at this point that people won't stop smoking the stuff even though the money mostly goes to cartels in Central and South America. I've definitely seen people suggest that we need to legalize it because the money goes to violent narco-gangs as if there was some natural right to the drug.

Personally, I wish the decision would be based on science whether that means full legalization or continued criminalization or somewhere in the middle rather than a bunch of children refusing to respect the law or go through debate based on actual reasonable reasons. The arguments I heard before the legalized it here were pretty childish and didn't really warrant changing the law. Not that the pro-criminalization arguments were really any better, but the status quo doesn't really need particular justification.

Personally I want all drugs cheap and legal with low to no taxes and very lightly regulated and available to all with the ability to buy anywhere and everywhere not just pot.I think pot at least needs to be legal and cheap enough so it can compete with the street pot.

Pot should be legal.

And when there are no consequences to 3rd parties we can consider that.

Personally, I think that we should follow the science on pot and I think the science is pushing towards either full legalization or at least making it a monetary fine of some reasonable amount.

But, full legalization of all drugs doesn't work when other people are on the hook for the consequences of said drug use.

trump's appealing to progressives is a bid to scrape votes from the reefer community but also throwing shade on Kamala who was notorious for incarcerating marijuana users in the black community.

Considering the history of the War on Drugs, if John Ehrlichman's account is true, this is very uncharacteristic of Trump.

Would he, though? I don't trust him. Besides, even if I could, the party he is in and the congress that he would have if he won (which would be Republican dominated) wouldn't support it.
