Single Men Joining Orthodox Churches

Young, single men are leaving traditional churches. They found a more ‘masculine’ alternative
New parishes are planned across US to accommodate ‘tsunami’ of male worshippers who have converted since pandemic
Young, single men are flocking to the Orthodox church after discovering the “masculine” Christian religion through online influencers.
Some converts said they felt disillusioned with the “feminisation” of the Protestant church and were attracted to the “authenticity” of Orthodoxy, which they claim pushes them physically and mentally.
Priests are now planning to open new parishes to accommodate the “tsunami” of young men who have converted since the pandemic.
They say that most of the new converts found the Orthodox church by watching YouTube videos or listening to podcasts....
...A 2023 survey by the Orthodox Studies Institute of Orthodox clergy in 20 parishes across 15 states found there had been a 80 per cent increase in the number of converts to the Orthodox church in 2022, compared with pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
Of these, 60 per cent were men, compared with 54 per cent in 2019.
Many of them had been drawn to the “masculine” nature of church, which puts emphasis on denial and pushing yourself physically.
Worshippers must stand for long services, which can last upwards of five hours. They must fast, too, sometimes for up to 40 days.
This, some felt, was in stark contrast to other religious denominations where they felt the church had been “feminised”....
I hadn't heard much about Orthodox churches before--I thought that it was just for Greek and other Eastern-European communities.

Not surprising considering how much the alt-right is driven by Russian influence.

There was a Seinfeld episode where George converted to Orthodox Christianity, and Kramer fell in love with an Orthodox nun. The main trait about Orthodoxy covered was the amount of studying required in order to join.

Beware of the Daily Telegraph's culture war bs. This once great newspaper is pure agenda-driven trash these days.
Yes the study exists and was published in July 2024. This is concocted into 'news' for 2025.
If you look at the study: Converts to Orthodoxy
You'll see that they're talking about 124 converts in total in 2023. Of which 72 are men. The average yearly conversion rate over the last ten years is 100.
A 'tsunami'. Yeah.
The report itself also doesn't concern itself with the reasons why this slight increase has happened. The suggestion it is to do with the Orthodox church's more masculine reputation is only here in unattributed quotes. Which means no one of any account has said it, no research has been done into it and it could quite easily just be a single random tweet, or simply pulled out of the 'journalist's' bum hole.

Thanks for the reality check.

I remember this character from a few years ago.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYQ573MVodc
I guess he is still around. A Jew who became an "Orthodox Christian" of sorts, and who goes around in priestly garb.
https://juicyecumenism.com/2024/07/11/o ... angelists/
...Stepping even further from the structure and doctrine of the Church is an internet influencer styling himself as “Brother” Nathanael Kapner, who purports to be an Orthodox monastic and street evangelist in the Russian tradition. Aside from being something of a local fascination in Boise, Idaho where his street ministry is based, Kapner has achieved significant clout with his short-form video content, which regularly scores over 100,000 views on Tiktok and Instagram.
Kapner has also made a splash online for being one of the most vocally antisemitic voices orbiting Orthodoxy online. Kapner’s blog, Real Jew News, claims its mission as to “warn how Jewry is destroying Christianity throughout the world.” Kapner’s website has also repeatedly promoted conspiracy theories about the veracity of the Holocaust, the 9/11 attacks, and a variety of other topics reflecting Kapner’s monomaniacal hatred of the Jewish people.
The Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR), which Kapner claims to be affiliated with, has harshly condemned him and his public statements. The ROCOR Synod of Bishops statement, issued in 2013, writes that “profoundly saddened by the state of his soul, we call upon Nathanael (Kapner) to refrain from posting on the Internet, to a life of repentance of peace in Christ.” Although a far more radical departure from the teaching of the Church than Heers, Kapner represents the same phenomenon of those firmly outside of the Orthodox Church claiming to speak for it and its doctrine...
https://www.ancientfaith.com/podcasts/n ... rituality/
Presented for your consideration (as Rod Serling used to say): an old man dressed up as an Orthodox priest-monk who is actually neither priest nor monk, performing outrageous antics both in public and online in a furious attempt to draw attention to himself. Mr. Milton Kapner calls himself Brother Nathanael, and he is a Jewish man who has attracted a large following of online listeners to his regular virulent anti-Semitic rants. Though he was once a novice in an Old Calendarist monastery in Colorado, he was kicked out of that monastery and is now not a monk at all, despite wearing monastic garb, but “a showman with a persecution complex who likes to be the center of attention”
He has a following, but I don't know if he actually stimulated anyone to join a legitimate Orthodox congregation, or if he has started a rogue Orthodox church of some sort.

It looks like the study referenced only included data from 20 parishes in the US, though. I think there are actually a few thousand parishes nationwide and counting. And, the process of joining the orthodox church is lengthy and the study only counted those who had been received through baptism or chrismation during a certain time period. So, the big influx in catechumen that there seems to have been during the early years of the pandemic might not really be reflected in the limited study, either, as some of those folks may not have made it through the whole process by 2023.
I had looked into orthodoxy around 2016 or 2017, after getting really into reading the early church fathers during a spiritual crisis, but ultimately didn't convert for a few theological and personal reasons. I recently revisited it and was sort of shocked at how orthodoxy in America has changed in the interim. I really think it's not an overstatement to say there has been a big increase in young male converts in recent years and they seem to mostly share the same political and social views.
The shift to the alt right and the blatant misogyny being expressed by orthodox clergy and so-called "Orthobros" online that I saw was really disturbing. Granted, those voices don't necessary reflect what is going on in local parishes, but there doesn't really seem to be any effort by those in positions of authority within the church to address it, either, which sort of implies they don't view it as a problem.
Here is another article from Euronews:
https://www.euronews.com/2023/07/31/dem ... nfluencers
A small, slick contingent of young Orthodox stars are harnessing social media to spread extreme messages around the globe.
“Democracy is a tool of Satan that has been perfected by Jews and their gentile allies in secret societies to take sly control of nations while allowing citizens to feel that they have a choice in the matter, keeping them compliant and dumb.”
These are the written words of Roosh Valizadeh.
In his rampantly anti-Semitic online writings - which parrot the classic line that Jews run the world – the former pickup and alt-right blogger, turned Orthodox zealot, talks about a once Christian West transformed into a state of “Jewish pornographic sewage”.
Alleged national decline is a prominent theme in the American’s writings, believing untold millions in the Western world have sold their “souls for comfort, money, and sex”.
"America’s “moral sickness” is in its terminal stage,” he wrote in one blog post. “The boomers are busy counting their money, Gen X is trying to keep their 2.1 children from becoming gay, millennials opened Pandora’s box on degeneracy… and the zoomers may not be able to keep their brains intact from being exposed to hardcore pornography at the age of eight.”
‘They’re done with democracy’
Roosh V is just one of a small clique of more radical Orthodox internet celebrities.
Orthodox Christianity in the United States is a very complex religious scene, with each influencer having their own particular brand.
Historically Orthodoxy was the faith of Eastern European immigrants. However, Sarah Riccardi-Swartz, assistant professor of religion and anthropology at Northeastern University, told Euronews the religion is being pulled to the right, "even alt-right", by a rising cohort of home-grown converts.
“They go by labels like traditionalist, America First, patriots or monarchists. They use all sorts of different political descriptors. But one of the things they have in common is that they’re largely far-right. They're kind of done with American democracy,” she said.
Many tap into disaffection within religious communities that mainstream church leaders and right-wing politicians have let society turn its back on religion and morality.
Using meme culture, their own websites and social media platforms, such as Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, the Orthodox celebs reach tens of thousands of people on a daily basis.
“What’s drawing people specifically to Orthodoxy is they see it as a faith that is unchanged, one that has kept to traditional gender roles, forms of patriarchy and hierarchy,” Riccardi-Swartz explained. “That's really appealing to a community that feels like society and gender roles are shifting rapidly.”
“It's fascinating that they use social media to expand their base and movement, which is a lot about getting back to the land... and going offline,” she added, pointing out how modern technologies were ironically being used to revive deeply traditional societies....
The link by the name Roosh Valizadeh : https://x.com/rooshv shows that his X account was shut down for violating the "X Rules" -- I wonder what rule he could have violated? Maybe he personally insulted Elon Musk somehow?
Anyway, this Roosh Valizadeh is quite a character: https://www.splcenter.org/resources/ext ... valizadeh/

I don't know if this has anything to do with it,
but women are the most likely to trigger a divorce
and it hurts men a lot.
Some religious women are more likely to take marriage seriously.
Some of my male friends cited interest in pursuing these women
for this reason, which actually I can understand.
I grew up in a very anti-men environment, where the detrimental
effects of toxic masculinity on men was not at all taken into account,
and women given all the power, which they immediately abused in workplaces
to threaten men for completely ridiculous stuff.
Anything taken out of context could be used against men to get us fired.
^Well, there is that, too. In a workplace, a woman can yield and abuse a tremendous amount of power.
Somewhere else in here, someone was commenting that there are a lot of single women who are Jehovah's Witnesses, and they're likely to remain spinsters, and die as old maids, because they won't consider marrying outside of their cult.
I think that Orthodox churches are less culty, and that an Orthodox woman wouldn't necessarily be averse to marrying outside of the faith. But, maybe they have a lot of lonely, single women too.
But, there may be some hoops to jump through to join an Orthodox church, if you aren't part of a particular Orthodox church's ethnicity.

Another article, this one from the NY Post (which is, admittedly, more of a tabloid than the Telegraph)
Young men leaving traditional churches for ‘masculine’ Orthodox Christianity in droves
https://nypost.com/2024/12/03/us-news/y ... in-droves/
It doesn't state that young men are converting in hopes of meeting chicks--that is something that I would be curious about. Young men often think about sex a lot.

Well,
https://orthochristian.com/42390.html
In a time when churches of every description are faced with Vanishing Male Syndrome, men are showing up at Eastern Orthodox churches in numbers that, if not numerically impressive, are proportionately intriguing. This may be the only church which attracts and holds men in numbers equal to women.
Looks like a young single heterosexual man wouldn't be improving his chances by converting to orthodoxy.
