I don't seem really hopeful about peace talks on Ukraine between the US and Russia. Our prime minister says we may have to consider sending in troops to keep the peace and other countries in Europe have said the same. I actually thought that with trump in power he would keep countries like Russia, China and others from doing anything they like and reconsider because he a no-nonsense guy unlike biden even though I'm not a trump fan. I try not to look at any news to do about it but it's hard sometimes to completely avoid it. I do get irritated when the talk of a world war kicks off and people making out as though Putin is another Hitler and that we are in some kind of pre 1939 world before the ww2 started.

My brother in Christ, how could the guy who's never met an autocrat he didn't kowtow to be expected to stand up to autocrats? Like, have you not been paying attention to how Trump acts towards Putin?

I find that not thinking about war helps.

Don’t worry it’s a red herring as they say.

The UK government said it can put troops in Ukraine only after peace. So they would act as peace keepers.

Russia said it’s against any NATO troops or even troops from NATO countries in Ukraine and threatened to nuke any he sees ( putins infamous quote in early 2022 that the world will see something it’s never seen before)

So it will not happen. It’s a way of looking important claiming you could do something you know you’ll never have to do.

The UK army is too small anyway Ukraine are losing about 500 soldiers a day for the last 3 years or about 6-700k (ignore propaganda figure of 10’s thousands)

So the UK army would be done in about a month.

Fortunately that’s not going to happen, I support peace it’s good for Ukraine and good for the world.

It's worth noting Benny Johnson was recently busted for taking Russian money to spread their disinformation.

The Duran is a Russia disinfo slop channel. Peter Lavelle, Alex Christoforou and Alexander Mercouris have all been involved with peddling Russian disinfo for years. Even their logo is derived from the Russian coat-of-arms.

Traven, your sources are as credible as the Weekly World News.

Why would that irritate you?

There are clear parallels. If you take what Hitler did with Czechoslovakia prior to WWII its basically the same game Putin is playing.

If we don't learn from history we're doomed to repeat it, isn't that what they say?

There's a refresher for anyone unfamiliar with what DuckHairback is referring to.

If Putin over-runs Ukraine and occupies it - a big if - he probably won't stop there, and may then invade other nearby countries. Putin is clever, unlike his lackey Trump, and plays a long game. IF he tries to acquire multiple countries then yes, a major war seems likely, because Nato would then have to act. Currently we are seeing Trump assisting to advance Putin's outrageous intentions. Trump is not only a traitor to the USA, he is much more dangerous and corrupt than that.

I don't know why there are people who think that Putin is another Hitler, he's only interested taking back the places that used to be part of the former soviet union or russian empire like Ukraine, the Baltic states etc. I doubt he is interested in taking over western European countries like UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. What would be the point of doing that?

How's that any better? Just because you don't think he wants to invade your homeland doesn't mean he's not a threat to peace.

What a shame they didn't accept the referendum results? This was all so predictable, but the Ukraine government wouldn't give up the indutrial wealth of the russian speaking sector. I wonder if anyone has done a cost analysis; cedeing territory which was russian anyway a few decades ago, compared to fighting a largely pointless war over it? Even in the unlikely outcome of Ukraine winning (or geting a stalemate) it's a problem that will not go away.

Putin would not attack the countries you cite for obvious reasons. The likely targets next are Muldova and Georgia.

The thing is also how come he hasn't also attacked the countries literally on his border already like Finland, Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania etc which are now NATO countries? He surely knows that attacking a NATO country must be suicide. I don't like the man but he is not insane. It reminds me of a line from a documentary I saw about the Roman emperor Caligula if he was bonkers why was made emperor in the first place?

Well that's another parallel with Hitler, who when he was annexing the Sudetenland and thinking about how best to carve Poland up was very much betting that France and Britain wouldn't get in the way of his expansionist plans. He had no intentions of invading either. Didn't stop both countries getting drawn in.

I get it. It's more comforting to think that Putin is a reasonable man who will stop if appeased. Chamberlain thought that about Hitler too.

But the reality is he's a pretty old man (by Russian standards) who has been nursing this grievance about the breakup of the USSR for decades, has publicly compared himself to Peter the Great and has demonstrated that he's more than happy to send hundreds of thousands of young men of his own country to their deaths, if it helps him achieve his expansionist agenda before he runs out of time.

I can understand why you wouldn't want to believe it but in my opinion, anyone who isn't worried about this descending into a global conflict simply isn't paying enough attention.
