Has anyone seen how expensive gas has gotten here in America? I hear it's a problem in Europe too. I know oil barrel prices is now at $65 a barrel. There has to be other factors as well? Does anyone think George W. Bush is responsible for the rising gas prices. It's about to go over $2.50 where I live.

Part of this is that refineries can't keep up w/ demand. And it's pretty difficult to build a refinery these days. Who wants one in their backyard?

sorry, chaps, but... good. then perhaps people will use less of it, and stop depleting natural, unrenewable resources.

Its a lot more expensive here but then our government has more services to pay for. As i understand the government over there takes a more Capatilistic hands off approach when it comes to taxes and services.

What do you expect when the nation elects a Texas oilman to the White House?

I agree with vetivert - cars contribute so much to pollution and climate change I think it should be taxed higher!

I think his warmongering caused it, as well as his connections to Big Oil. Damn greedy Republicans... Though I can't say the general populace is free from blame...

A good solution to this would be piss-powered (ala Jello Biafra, my hero), solar powered, garbage powered or bio-diesel (recycled veggie oil) cars. Hell, if the government didn't put such an ugly, undeserved stigma on weed/hemp, that could be commercially grown and used (I suggest opening up a file-sharing program and searching for Jello Biafra "Grow More Pot". Very interesting what we could do with hemp!)

It would also help if people quit guzzling the gas with their pseudo-hummers, trucks and damned SUV's and buy more fuel-efficient cars. If people weren't so obsessed with who's is bigger, we may very well not have this problem, or not as big a problem.

Saying things like this has gotten me called a tree-hugging little socialist...

Gas is pretty expensive here, too. About $2.60 or so last time I checked. But maybe it would all be better if people realized they don't need to drive everywhere and start taking public transportation occasionally.

my commute is 40 miles each way, most over back roads. These gas prices are killing me!

I feel sorry for the small towns without public transportation that are 20 miles or more away from larger cities where most of the work is. The small town I used to live in had none to speak of except a special transit unit for the elderly. But even that didn't go outside town. :? So many people there could have benefitted from it.

So it is a worldwide problem. Here in Australia the petrol prices are well over $AUS1 a litre. :x

Hmm, the Usa must be different from Britain then as most work here is in the cities were public transport is more plentiful if not up to the standard everyone would like.

It appears very much to be a world wide issue.

As much as I dislike Bush, I'm having a hard time blaming him for rising prices. I beleive, based on no research what-so-ever, that its due to demand.

Cars are getting larger and larger. During the last US energy crisis (Carter era) almost everyone was concerned about miles/per/gallon. Now, very, very few people I know care about that--its about personal comfort.

Plus India and China are now coming on board.

High energy prices are a concern for people on fixed incomes, especially those who do not have access to mass transit. I feel for those people. I don't mind it making the Hummer owner think twice though....

I know what you mean. Unfortunately, Alabama is one of the worst states for public transportation as far as availability, use, and funding for it. I live in a suburb of Huntsville, and I am so mad we don't have city busses that run out that far. Fortunately in a week, I'm moving away to another college in state that is at least more pedestrian friendly as it's a typical southern small town. Heck, I can even walk from my apartment to the Waffle House if I felt like it.

aaron,

Of course GW is responsible. Firstly, they havn't been getting any oil out of Iraq. Everything is all busted-up from the bombings. Secondly, they have to pay for the war effort there somehow.

BitterGeek and BeeBee,

The advent of those newfangled "fuel-efficiency" models has gotten bad for the oil business so it stands to reason they have to "recover" their losses. Also, there are not that many oil companies around, is there? I think we can count them in the fingers of one hand -correct me if I'm wrong. With that kind of monopoly, it stands to reason they can do whatever they please 8O

tokaia and ed,

You both hit the nail right on the head about the oil baron in the White House thing. This is the blatant example of absolute power corrupting absolutely. Greed rears it ugly head. Very sordid

Alright... enough said. I'm going mountain biking
