I just got thrown out of someone's house for believing in evolution.

Who has gotten thrown out of an abode because a belief of any kind?

I'm sorry, that really sucks. You got thrown out of a house just because you believed in scientific fact over religious scripture? I don't know the whole story but if they did only throw you out because of your belief in evolution, that just goes to show how psychotic fundies are.

Never so far. Sounds like your host is narrow minded enough to look through a keyhole with both eyes.

On second thoughts, I might throw someone out who persistently advocated a belief that I think will lead to serious harm to others, and is unwilling even to acknowledge that there might be a problem. A proud Nazi, for example. There are people who put evolution in the same category. I think they're wrong, but I can see their point of view, at least a little.

I like your signature.

She was also afraid that I would seduce her 15-year-old son. If you think about it, that's also an example of fundie psychosis.

My parents tried to. My father wanted to disown me, and my mother was convinced that I was infested with demons. I countered by lecturing to them in grand style about what pathetic morons they were being, and I continued to do so for a couple of years. By the end of it, they would look like they were on the verge of tears and ask me to shut up whenever I brought the subject up. Why? Simple: I was right, and they were wrong. They were functionally non-religious throughout most of my upbringing, and they hadn't been taking their religion seriously. I showed them extensive data showing the dramatically elevated crime rates among functionally non-religious Christians, particularly in comparison to declared atheists and agnostics. I tore them limb from limb. They had pissed me off, and I didn't let up until they had 1) stopped being as*holes to me over the religion thing, and 2) started attending church on a regular basis. I cannot take religious people seriously unless they are actually practicing their beliefs, and feel at liberty to treat them like the complete jerks they are unless either they back off or they at least pretend they give a crap about their own faith. I am telling you, I am not merciful or forgiving. My wrath is terrible.

Sort of like the Old Testament God in Deuteronomy 28:15-68?

Pretty much, AG. I'm serious, too. When I get REALLY in a tizzy, I literally start speaking in sermon. It's creepy to hear myself do it. It's like a part of myself I don't even know very well...

It's amazing how some people feel threatened by some beliefs. My guess is the foundations of what they believe aren't too strong (for them), or they wouldn't act like that.

That's just beyond the pale. People that oppressive towards opposing views are afraid of reality. The only way they can protect their beliefs is to shut people up. Just like the Catholic Church used to do in the middle ages.

There are hot button issues for me that I take very seriously. Religion is not one of them. If someone was a guest in my home and started spouting off an opinion that I found offensive, they'd be out the door too. (Unless I decided to chain them in the basement and torture them for awhile.) I respect other peoples opinion and right to free speech, but not in my home. I would not tolerate my little corner of the universe being polluted by the soapbox antics of an overblown contrarian.

That to bad you got thrown out of someones house, but you should be proud, its ok to stand up for your beliefs, that takes alot of courage and alot of character.

Was it that you were thrown out because of your beliefs or because of how you were acting because of those beliefs?

Ie Were you in their house insisting they didn't know anything because they believed in creation without evolution.

If so it was rudeness that got you kicked out, not your beliefs.

However if you were thrown out solely because you said i believe in evolution, and perhaps provided a few examples as to why, then they're complete idiots.

(Also, evolution has been proven so those who deny it deny what god is enabling them to see in their own lifetimes. In a 1980'a experiment, Anatolis Lizards evolved into a different species in a mere 14 years when introduced to different islands)

My bf's family is Conservative jewish. I'm an atheist raised christian. I've no problem at their house. I respect their rules and they have me participate in customs I know nothing about (ie washing 2 fingers on your hands, breaking bread and drinking wine before friday night dinner). And they gave me a candy cane on christmas. BFs mom said it was "my christmas celebration in a household that doesn't celebrate christmas." There are a few rules/beliefs I'll never understand why they follow, and I've told bf about that, but I wouldn't bring it up to his parents. I imagine if I was constantly criticizing them for doing things like not drinking milk while eating meat because thats a more recent jewish rule than most I wouldn't be invited back to their house a second time

The only reason half my relatives still speak to me, despite our radically differing beliefs, is because they hardly see me enough to even know what I think of the weather. If the visits were more frequent, the amount of conversation would be proportional, and therefore they would become incredibly fumed by my logical bluntness.

Holy crap... I knew God was f***ed up, but goddamn that bitz is whacked! That was the first time I read that, and I just walked three paces further away from Judeochristian dogma.
