"...His Holiness’ second commitment is the promotion of religious harmony and understanding among the world’s major religious traditions. Despite philosophical differences, all major world religions have the same potential to create good human beings. It is therefore important for all religious traditions to respect one another and recognize the value of each other’s respective traditions. As far as one truth, one religion is concerned, this is relevant on an individual level. However, for the community at large, several truths, several religions are necessary. "
-His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama

I guess you'll have to ask the DL himself.

"Official site."

I curse Gyatso, not because he's a brilliant man, but because I got a displaced ligament in my hand while typing a draft article on him at citizendium.org >_<. Never bothered completing the draft after that.

I doubt satanists, neopagans and such make "good human beings" in the eyes of most conservative followers of any religion, although we all know that's far from true.

I don't think he considers satanism or neopaganism to be major world religions.

The reason I posted this is because I've been receiving complaints about a handful of members promoting thier views at the expense of others. These people seem to think that anybody who disagrees with them is just wrong. That leaves little room for discussion. Since this is a discussion forum, such people need to find a different venue for thier views, one where no-one will disagree with them.

Well, it is religion that is being discussed, along with politics. I am sure people would have a hard time separating their beliefs when debating with others. You begin the discussion already decided.

As long as no one is issuing online fatwas.

According to the complaints I've recieved, it's not being discussed. A few individuals are attempting to promote thier point of view at the expense of others.

Already decided? No. I don't agree with skafather84, but I don't need to attack him or his position.

Oh, and you're one of the people being complained about, oscuria. I haven't had time to investigate these complaints, so I reserve judgement.

My job is not to ban people. My job is to help people understand what they need to do (or refrain from doing) in order to retain their posting privileges and avoid finding themselves in "read-only" mode.

There is going to be differences in interpretations. This is always true. Take for example Christianity, there are both heterodox and orthodox interpretations. There is going to be "friction" between the two groups because it is on a subject fundamental to each; one freely interpreting, the other literally interpreting. Even conflict arises when it is two of the same group but from different regions.

I have no idea what the people, or you, mean by "at the expense" of others. And what would constitute as an attack against Skafather? Calling him derogatory names or claiming his belief is the wrong one to have? I only know the former to be a legitimate attacks.

What does it mean to "promote unity" when the discussion begs for a debate?

Clarify?

I am sure there has been complaints against me. My views are very conservative. The views here tend to be very liberal. However, I always stress that these are my beliefs and are based on my line of study and interpretation (the group to which I identify).
