Are there any mormons here or people who now about the Mormon *sect*? As controversial as they are they sure do have some REALLY fabulous, ornate churches. The Mormon Church here in Portland being one them. Mormons believe that Jesus Christ came to live in the North America for a while after he rose from the dead back in Israel-am I wrong?

Yes, Mormons believe Jesus came to America. Their tradition centers on a lot of North American-based things.

I know a few Mormons, and they're all nice people. I don't know too much about the Mormon faith, though.

There are some mormons in my family, and I've been to a Mormon worship service before. I really didn't see anything about them that set off any alarms. I don't necessarily agree with the things they say theologically, but I have nothing against the constituents...

I hear that they wont allow just anyone into their churches, EVEN new converts. You have to be deemed templeworthy :?.... and Im totally unclear where you go in the meantime before you're permitted in the congregation.

There's varying levels of Mormon establishments: Wards (which are local churches), and Temples (which are those really huge places) are the two main divisions. Wards allow anyone inside, but it's the Temples that are a bit more restrictive.

Joke:

A Mormon was seated next to an Irishman on a flight from London. After the plane was airborne, drink orders were taken.

The Irishman asked for a whiskey, which was promptly brought and placed before him.

The flight attendant then asked the Mormon if he would like a drink.

He replied in disgust, “I’d rather be savagely raped by a dozen whores than let liquor touch my lips.”

The Irishman then handed his drink back to the attendant and said, “Me, too, I didn’t know we had a choice.”

Most protestant churches in the US are pretty plain looking and unremarkable but Mormon Temples a really fabulously designed. What is the reason for this opulence in their architecture? Also, the LDS folk seem to be A LOT more exclusive than most protestant denominations; they really make converts jump through hoops before they can be a full participant in the LDS community.
