The colour of his skin is the big touching point, more than his racial heritage. Many "African-Americans" are descended from slavery, and Obama is not (with a white mother and a Kenyan father), but he'd still have to face discrimination due to his skin colour.

Note that a lot of African-Americans who descended from slavery have white ancestors somewhere down the line.

We can argue he's really biracial, but he is undoubtedly the most black of any president we've ever had.

He is as black as any African-American, which is to say he has some white ancestors.

Most legal definitions of blackness under governments which had laws discriminating against blacks (South Africa, the American South) defined black as having even "one drop of black blood" in one's ancestry. So yes, by the definition of blackness enforced on people of color at certain times, Obama is black.

Well, it's more complicated than that. His relationship to the African American community has been called into question (enter: the Jesse Jackson "i want to cut his nuts off" comment); shortly after the inauguration I heard some (clearly African American) woman on the radio saying how he didn't really understand what it was to be an African American because he wasn't descended from slaves; basically boiled down to: "he can't talk about race in is address, he's not really black."

At least, that's what I got from it.

Some black folk think Obama is a Tom aka an Uncle Tom. So I guess some blacks do think he should be called black.

Obama closer to an african-american than many blacks in the usa because obama dad is apparently african.
