Steve becomes PM, Steve make law for election every 4 years, Steve breaks law, get minority government again. Was there really a point to the election? I don't think so.
The good news is no one in Newfoundland elected any of Steve's lapdogs. Some people think its a bad thing, but I think it's great, Newfoundland has been pushed around by the government regardless if the MPs are with the PM or not. Now we have a primier that actually stands up and said 'stop pushing us around!' some people (not too many) don't like our priemier's attitude, but that is because they are so used to be pushed around that they are not accustomed to self-confidance and thus think it's bad.
I am sad that Steve got back in, to only consolation is it's a minority, and his day will come that he will no longer have power. Knowing him he will be so greedy that he will trigger another election in 2 years.

Splinter parties topic
We need to find a truly national party again. I am all for regional differences but to hold Canada together we need something cohesive. Difficult because of disparities, distance, disdain, doubt. I guess I grew up believing in Trudeau's Federalist ideal, despite shortcomings. I do not believe in the cult of a leader but Canada needs some truly national spirit. Until then, there will be voter apathy and factionalism like the Bloc, Conservative Party, and more Independents, who prefer to stay in their own back yards with high fences, where they naturally feel safe.

I am beside myself on how this is such a joke.
Most of the people I've talked to: say......
"I didn't vote....because............."I didn't understand what it's all about....I didn't vote because I don't understand the party platforms....their values, etc...

I can't stand it!! !
oh.....but I hear it's voter "fatigue".......ha....you've got to be kidding me!! ! what would the peasants of the French Revolution think of us????......they would spit in our faces!! !! why do we accept defeat......why? .............are we so used to being "baby-sat" we forget what it's like to be free?................FREE!............strong and proud.....and able to survive!!

and the .... (debate??????) holy cr**p-sky.....what was that?
Canadians vote: in a nano-second.....have dumb-a**ss debate - aka - (gobli-gook).............round a "round-table".....and the only thing they can do is gang up on Harper like a gang of thugs...(but still - no excuse......we could still read....and research - we could still use our intellect to tell us that this election was not based on any concrete solution........it was based on one-up-manship......then.......it confused .....the non-English/Frence speaking residents into believing Steven is gonna help them.....(ha......ha....ha....).............(all in a nano-second)....and then...
quick....quick....quick.. - don't think - just vote Harper!!. (don't let them pressure you.....research!! ! read!! !! take responsibility....this is our Country............what's left of it!! !
VOTE!! !! !!
BUT WHERE???............ahhhh..........I dunno....(I had to tell my immigrant friend where to vote....looked it up for her...(took me under five minutes.....why was that so hard for her to do on her own?????)........and she still DID NOT VOTE!)............WHY? (I also gave her a complete synopsis of the party platforms, values, and ethics.....she can read ....can't she?.....why did she not vote????...............why?.............grrrrrrr!! !! ! what the fu**ck is the excuse? - there IS NO EXCUSE!! !! (when Harper cuts all of the social luxury's they're enjoying at the moment...........cause the GDP is shrinking as we speak..(especially since Obama wants to re-negotiate the NAFTA agreement.....good for you guys....but will suck for us) .....and Harper won't have half the money his dumb-a**ss finance minister promised!! !)....oops....guess that means: CUTS............to social spending!! !!............and ....she'll be whining.....and carping and crying..........booo--hooo Canada is just not the land of opportunity that she thought it was..................then.............why........didn't you VOTE!! !!

a shut-in?............let's hope that you're grand-....whatever's like you enough to drive you to the polling station.....(that is if it really exists)....but if not............mail you freaking vote in.....in the early bird vote....(hey....you can do it in the BINGO.....you can do it for a Federal Election for your COUNTRY!! !!
oh....
and....
if you so confused - and don't understand a thing - cause you're too fu**king lazy to read....and you bi**ch about the "status-quo" don't do it around me.............
cause you let me down!! !!
(do you know that there are people's that die to be able to vote?)............
and you...

how ......bout that chance we had...couple years back..........when they asked us about proportional representation?????
What the H**lll!! ! - why did you guys throw that bone away....dang it!! ! it was a bone!! !! !
p.s. I can really understand why Americans think we're puss***'s....
arrrrgggggg!
the shame!! !
I liked the solidarity of the Trudeau years, but I don't think we're ever going back to that. I really think that sooner or later our leaders will have to see that we need proportional representation and coalition governments. Coalition governments can work, if people are willing to cooperate rather than thump chests. What would help is if we really truly had proportional representation, with 50% female representatives (funny how that one rarely comes up in discussions, but I think it's fairly fundamental), since women tend to be more cooperative than men, or at least a little less competitive.

When you mentioned female representation.........it's interesting that the only candidate who came to my house, spent time speaking with me..........and then followed up.....was a women....(co-incidence???).....that aside....
there should be more of a balance between male/female.....both genders have strengths that are definately complimentary...which would also be a big plus in a coalition.....
I also want to say how much I appreciate your input and opinion....I was so upset with the "defeatist" attitude.....of some........
also.....I love that you speak of unity, solidarity and co-operation.....here in Ontario some are misguided about our neighbours out West.....(I knew it wasn't true!!)

Proportional voting topic
I think this would be worth a try, but not too soon. Next election, definitely. The referendum done a while back to gauge whether this was a good idea was, of course, not calculated proportionately!

As for proportional representation, I would support a mixed system, copied on the German's or something similar.
I would not want a system like in Italy or Israel...too unstable.
I think that one of the main reasons behind voter apathy is the fact that people don't think their vote counts or has an impact on who will get elected. Changing the electoral system, so that smaller parties who get a significant portion of the vote but no seats are represented, would have a positive impact on voters' will to participate in the electoral process.
Also, political parties campaigning by promoting their ideas and positions with regards to public policy, rather than attacking each others personal traits, would help restoring voter confidence in our system.

At the time - I was very naive about politics....but - could see right away.....that we were being "thrown a bone"..........I was shocked that it was rejected.....(and the way it was calculated....in more ways than one - eh?.....it was just thrown out there....without helping the public to really understand it....or take the time.....to decide...) Why - does the process in this country have to happen so fast......toooooooo fast!.....grrrrr..

valid point....and that was definately the concern of many....

yes.....many young people especially were inspired by the "Green Party".....and many, many votes went to them............Elizabeth May....seemed very grass-root sincere...and she definately did her homework.....and she "biked the walk".....and not one seat.....that does not reflect the wants, needs, desires or mind-set of thousands of people in our countrty....for them not to have an official voice is "wrong". Even one or two seats....would at the very least allow them a "foot in the door"...

When I think of the dollars spent on negative advertising.......akkkkkk!! !
and the debate!
If any of the parties would have realized "not to attack" but to state the positive.....state their platforms....and my opinion is that they should have "ignored" the incumbent.....maybe that would have forced him to crawl out of his hole and reveal something...of his adjenda....the other parties made is so easy for him to sit-back.......jeez.....
Elizabeth.....was very knowledgable....but she attacked too much....pointed out so many flaws....instead of focusing on some "credible"......solutions/ideas...
Jack....I love 'im....but - he needs to step-up and instead of attacking......he needs to "quantum-leap" over some of his own rhetoric...
The one thing that really struck a chord with me..............(and I didn't vote for his party...)...but Stephan.....struck me.....with his ????.....I don't know.....his soul....maybe?....or am I crazy....cause it's late at night?
(rhetorical........you know the drill)...........heh....heh.....
