Special Olympics-Spread the Word to End the Word

I think this is an awesome idea.

too bad i don't qualify for the special olympics.

my brother is a swimmer, runner and bowler.

he has brought home ribbons (but not medles)

Did you know you can compete in the Special Olympics if you are AS, regardless of IQ? My friend does it.

I think this is a very good idea. We need to get rid of that word. :O)

That idea is, for lack of a better word, ret*d.

Just like having a funeral for the word 'n****r' a few years back, it didn't change anything, and if anything, made people want to use the word even more.

I was in the special olympics... I don't remember there being any sort of request for qualification, but then again that could have been handled by the teacher... I didn't compete in any events, but i was part of the team who carried the banner in the opening ceremony...

You can compete if you have AS? That's interesting. I've always wanted to get into running (terrible at it at the moment but it seems like it would be relaxing). Maybe I'll have to check that out...

And what do they mean when they say ending the 'R' word? As in, the term "mentally ret*d" orrrr using it for name calling?

Using it for name calling. When it is used offensively. "That is so ret*d" or "You guys are being ret*ds"


not to mention,they use it out of context and it doesn't make sense...

Can we go back to "simple minded" or how about "unintelligent"? Let's face it folks, some of us are smarter than most of us. Some of us are less intelligent than most of us. Intelligence is distributed according to a Gaussian curve. There has to be a low end in order for there to be a high end.

Ok, we'll just go back to the accepted medical terms such as "moronic", "idiotic", "feeble-minded", etc.

I went years being called a ret*d, the reason why it doesn't bother me anymore is because I don't let it. For one thing, it's just a word, if you suck it up and just don't take the insults seriously, then who cares if someone wants to keep saying it. Should we also take action against anyone with Tourette's Syndrome who repeatedly says "ret*d" as a tic (I actually have known people who do that).

Let's not also forget about what makes the USA so great, it's freedom of speech, which doesn't need people to declare that words that offend them should be banned.

Should we also cater to anyone who's offended by anything? I've met Christans who seemed offended by my being an Atheist, should I start believing in a god just so they won't be offended? Should we all stop using dairy products and eating beef so we won't offend people of Hindu faith? Should we end the term "Neurotypical" on the day that someone claims to find it offensive?

in polite company we don't discuss the relative intelligence of individuals. the subject never comes up. now ACTIONS are a horse of a different color.

Well, *IQ* is normally distributed - it's defined that way (mean 100, sd 15). But has there been anything to show that intelligence itself is normally distributed? If we don't know what we mean by intelligence...

Also, there are other distributions available in maths...
