Quake, Tsunami In South Pacific Leave Dozens Dead

Quote:
September 30, 2009
A devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck the South Pacific on Tuesday, flattening Samoan villages and killing people as far away as Australia, have left more than 100 dead and dozens missing. Rescue workers feared the toll could go much higher.

Signs of devastation were everywhere Wednesday in Samoa and American Samoa.....

119 people killed last time I checked. Samoa looks like such a beautiful place...at least before this.

There was also a 7.6 earthquake in Sumarta, Indonesia. The Samoa was 8.0, both earthquakes were huge and have caused massive damage and many deaths.

Sumatran death toll is in the thousands. Samoan toll is around 300 with an estimated NZ$100 to NZ$200 damage bill. The entire south coast is devastated, resorts have simply vanished. American Samoa has, I think, 70 dead, and an island in Tonga has up to 30 dead.

Here in Tauranga we had a tsunami warning. A 40cm wave followed by an 80cm wave eventually arrived. Response by Civil Defence is being reviewed as it failed to keep the public adequately informed or gave confusing information. In one case text messages were sent out but didn't arrive until 3 hours after the last wave arrived.

This kind of news is my breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Do you want to know what it smells like? Brimstone.

You speak the truth, doesn't matter that you think I'm not worth your time or anyone elses. No one cares about us really. Better to cave in to depression.

There was another quake in the South Pacific, but no tsunamis this time.

Some "celebrities" in NZ have relatives injured or lost in the Tsunami. Boxer Davis Tua dedicated his recent comeback match to his Aunt, who died.
