Please Boycott the 2010 Olympics ! ! Why spend hundreds of millions of dollars for rich people to party for 2 weeks? Right now there is a systematic push to get the homeless and other poor people out of Vancouver. Just so Canada can put on a pretty face for the world. The only solution anyone has is homeless shelters. Have you ever stayed at a homeless shelter? Here you can't keep any possessions at them, and also they kick you out early in the morning. It is a complete joke. Made to simply make well off people feel good about themselves that somethings being done. Most of the resources for the homeless here is in Vancouver, By pushing the homeless out, It is only making it harder on them. I am ashamed to be Canadian, And will never ever again support any Olympic event.

There's no point since I am not interested in sports, anyway.

Been there, done that, but they weren't selling t-shirts.
(was a couple decades back)
They didn't let my cat in either - had to stay out in car - I was scared something bad would happen to Applesauce out there at night in a questionable part of the city. But enough about me

I don't know that I'd boycott - there may be hope that with all the people coming in and spending money some people, and the city too from food, entertainment, and lodging taxes, would wind up with more to give toward homeless causes afterwards.

However, that ain't gonna help the people losing housing now.

Maybe an idea to try to get athletes to be aware of the homelessness issue and speak on it?
Know they're not supposed to be political, and homelessness is brought up politically - but hey, homelessness is at its root a human matter - that's humans who are homeless :!:

Quote:
The former site of the Woodwards department store straddles the DTES and the business district. It was once championed by DTES activists as a place for affordable housing earlier this decade but was eventually developed into more than 500 condo units.

Therein lie some of the issues - for those who provide for their own families building and selling housing they can't make a living off providing housing to people who can't pay for it.

The city government is at cross purposes because it desires the property tax revenue to fund its operation and pay its employees. Homeless people aren't going to be paying property taxes, except maybe a tiny mount on a car if they have one. (mine ar3 $17) And will probably not be paying income taxes either.

Government funded homeless shelters and low income housing cost the government money  which has to come from somewhere - that being taxes on those who do have property and incomes.
And there's only so much they're willing to have taken away from what they've worked hard for.

The non-profit agencies providing homeless shelters are largely funded by wealthier people and corporations; so, taking income and revenue from wealthier people and corporations will reduce what they are willing to give and thereby hurt the charities.

On a slight tangent:
I am on 100% disability and live in government-subsidized housing which means  I'm living off the people who work hard to be successful and have to pay taxes on what they have earned.
And no way I'm going to begrudge them making money. The more the better.
When I was working I saw what the people I was getting paychecks from had to give up to be successful in their business. Successful people deserve to be rewarded for their hard work and sacrifice. In the end that helps me.

Of course I'm boycotting the 2010 games. I also boycotted the 2008 games in Bejing. I can't stand Canada or China.

Too late, I boycotted them ever since I heard the word Olympics as well as all the other sports that're mandatorily taxed.

Apparently nothing has changed since then.....

I'm annoyed about the 2012 games in the UK. For the next two years we have to put up with roads being closed to expand them, public transport coming to a halt while they make everything look pretty for the rich people... Not to mention the millions of pounds being wasted.

I just thought of a great idea! Have all the homeless people protest during the olympics that way they'll get arrested and put in a warm cell with 3 hots and a cot :D

Paid for by those who are making something of their lives and paying into the coffers. No thanks.

What they were protesting it's their right even if they don't pay taxes they are citizens and if they get arrested it's because the government is abusing their right to protest so it's all good everybody wins. But hey just kill the lazy ones keep the crazy ones right?

So what point are you arguing then?

No doubt the government is suppressing people's "rights" to protest during the olympics, but honestly, people need to shut up, the olympics are only for a few weeks, these people have been on the streets for years sometimes, they can wait a few weeks.

I don't agree with arresting them and putting them in jail because then they'll be getting something (ie. "Three hots and a cot") for nothing. I'm not a communist or anything though, but reciprocity-driven society has its benefits.

It's not for nothing it's for protesting when they don't want them to be seen or heard. See it works out they don't starve to death and in prison they can get praroled and be forced to get a job and can even getting job training in prison. If they have a drug problem it'll get fixed in prison (usually but they sneak them in too). Prison could do alot of good in the long term for those that are willing to change when offered such a chance. Homeless people don't choose to be so, I don't know why people believe this I really don't. If you had to choose btwn starving to death and working you'd choose work and all the homeless shelters and soup kitchens in the world can't feed the homeless that need it. Also since at least in America I know there aren't very many if any state run sanitariums (crazy people house for those that can't survive on their own and family can't care for them) so all those can't even do anything but live on the street or at the mercy of others. So if you don't like them just kill them b/c they will never go away there will always be homeless and there isn't anything that can be done by complaining about them being lazy or the burden they are. Just kill'im if you don't like'em.

Canadian prisons are different than American prisons. Look up how criminals are treated in Canadian prisons, it'll better explain why I don't think putting them in prison is a good idea.
