Try perusing The Onion's homepage; http://www.theonion.com/. They're sort of like a print version of The Daily Show, but I'd say even more satirical.

I think The Onion is hilarious--very darkly funny and ironic. They point out the ugliness and stupidity in the world and frame it in humor. Specifically, I found this article funny because I know there are people out there who really do think that having a child is a way to save a marriage. Obviously, babies don't save marriages and so this is about the worst reason anyone could have for deciding to have a child. It will be the child who pays for the parents' idiocy, whether autistic or not. It's funny because it could be true, and if we couldn't laugh at it, we'd cry.

Their first issue after 9/11 was positively brilliant and a great example of what satire should be. This is taken from a Wired article from around that time that discussed it:

"Holy f*****g s**t," reads the infographic topping this week's issue. The graphic shows a map of the United States engulfed in flames, overlaid with the crosshairs of a gun sight.

"The tone we were going for is that this is an unbelievable, horrifying thing that has happened," said Onion writer John Krewson. "It's an obscenity."

The headlines speak for themselves. "U.S. Vows To Defeat Whoever It Is We're At War With," "Not Knowing What Else To Do, Woman Bakes American-Flag Cake," and "Jerry Falwell: Is That Guy A Dick Or What?"

If you want a more to the point satire about the media circus and the innateness of media production, and how we lap it up check out Charlie Broker's Newswipe.

This is sooo true! I love the Onion even more than I already did before!

This is exactl;y what is wrong with Autism Speaks (at least in this respect- there is soo much more I can say about them); they constantly go on and on about marriages being ruined by autism. I think it's selfish and stupid to blame the disability of your child for breaking the marriage that you f****d up. I think that disabilities cause stress and (like a parent I came across wisely said), the disability likely magnifies the dysfunction that already exists in the relationship. I am heartbroken when children as young as 10 tell me that their parents aren't together because of them, to which I reply "It's not your fault that your parents are f*****g idiots" .

The Onion were right to make this article. I couldn't have made it any funnier myself.

Monique, there is a popular misconception among people who should never have gotten married that they can "fix everything" if they just have a child - the loving little bundle of goo will just magically cure all their arguments, tantrums, and general dislike of each other.

And of course having an autistic child can put strain on almost any relationship (unless, apparently, daddy is an aspie and mommy is depressive - for some reason, we've never tried to "blame" each other for our daughter, and have loved each other right on through).

Therefore, if the couple were already having trouble and then had an autistic child, they might try to put the blame on the baby for not "bringing them together" the way he/she was "supposed" to. And a great deal of the humor in the Onion comes from subverting the reader's expectations - in this case, treating such an unreasonable idea as if it held merit. (That's why their stories seem to be hit-and-miss with the autistic audience - we just don't have as many expectations of human behavior. I probably wouldn't have thought this was at all funny about twenty years ago, before I learned how most people think...
