if the chance of gi's getting hurt wasn't so real, the fiasco of florida would be roll in the floor funny. the burning of books is off because one imam maybe lied or maybe was misunderstood and the other imam says what the hell is going on and the pastor wants toshavehismustachebecauseheisreallyaloonor........

the unholy three...politicians, the media and religion have created this bizarre never ending episode of insanity that could really have dire consequences. do i really care? nnnnnaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh.

if things get out of hand, you can be sure of one thing. the politicians, the media and the religious figures involved will not be the ones getting hurt. it will be the grunts and aid workers and taxi drivers, all those just trying to do their jobs. how anyone can claim to belong to an organized religion is totally beyond my ability to comprehend. media humans seem to have a collective iq of 43. politicians are ....are......without honor.

I for one really don't think its funny and in fact very serious.... I go to UF and live about 3ish miles from there..... I've even been confronted by these idiots. they are putting the whole town/university at risk along with the rest of the country/world. I'll be spending my Saturday at home all because of a nut.

I hope that, instead of drenching the coach, the Florida Gators will march over to the church and dump their keg of Gatorade on said bonfire. (There's a game that day)

In all seriousness, though, there should be something we can do. I mean, in normal circumstances I would support the First Amendment (I am a journalist after all), but his careless actions pose a legitimate threat to national security. I mean, I believe there is a still-standing ruling preventing newspapers from leaking government documents if the leaks pose a threat to troops on the ground (anything else is fair game). And at the very least he must obtain a permit for the bonfire from the City of Gainesville (which had been denied last I checked). Why can't we stop him? His actions may not pose a direct threat, but the indirect threat would be no different then if he bombed a mosque killing everyone inside.

At any rate, we've managed to suppress 1st Amendment rights during wartime before. What was the saying in WWII? Something like "loose lips sink ships."

once upon a time......actually, a couple of years ago fred phelps and his band of merry pranksters protested at a funeral in the town i lived. big news for a small city. felt like i couldn't let this opportunity go by soooooo i made a sign on a stretched canvas i had, 3'x4', and added hardware so i could put it on a 7' 2x4. so off we went to the circus.

the local gendarmes had the phelps crew surrounded and protesters were not allowed to get too close. being the detail freak i am , i had thought this would be the case so i brought along a large arrow i had made from cardboard.

so, we stood as close as we could and i assembled the sign. it stood about 9' high, had an arrow attached that pointed at the pranksters and said 'proof there is no such thing as intelligent design'. we had lots of people come and stand with us with their own signs.......but none were as magnificent as ours. i felt so proud. no way you could miss the sucker......it was on the front page of the local university newspaper.

mattcel, when good people do not go out of their way to fight evil, evil always wins. i'm sorry you're upset about this, but who do you blame? every town in every state has it's own particular wacko causing trouble. it's the media showing how it has gone over to the dark side. why give this bozo such coverage? it is not the story they make it out to be. fred phelps has been complaining that the media didn't cover him when he burned quarans. they crave the camera in their faces. it's all a farce....something you will learn as you get older.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the case. I am glad that the pastor decided not to have his little fire, but I really think it's up to the community to stop people like this from going through with this kind of thing. Forget for a moment the negative repercussions and just think of the act itself. It's just plain wrong to burn someone else's holy book. You would hope that the people of his church would stand up and denounce the action. If not them, then the other christians that live within the community. This is a "man of god" who stood up and said that god wanted him to burn this book. The other christians should be offended and do everything they can to stop this guy from hijacking their religion and turning it into something it's not.

And by do something, I mean preventing the guy from going through with it. Physical restrain if necessary. Theft of the book if necessary. Whatever it takes. Evil doesn't generally back down until it gets what it wants. Sometimes, you have to punch it in the mouth to stop it.
