There's a feeling that good has prevailed over evil.Glad that justice has been done for the victims of 9/11 and the other bombings in London,Madrid,Bali etc ,but a little uneasy about the aftermath.
It was great work by all involved in finding Bin Laden and carrying out the mission, but you have to wonder how the authorities in Pakistan could possibly have failed to detect him.The fact that there's some confusion about exactly what happened is a little unsettling (locals denying they heard any firefight,Bin Laden supposedly "offering resistance" without being armed). In saying that, the innocent victims of
9/11 etc were also unarmed so if he died the same way he had it coming.
The spontaneous outpouring of happiness in America is perfectly understandable.I don't think any of us can say we're detached when
it comes to the threat of terrorism.Al Qaeda firebombed Glasgow Airport,2 miles from my home, with a blazing truck but luckily no one was killed apart from the terrorists themselves.

Indifferent. Someone else will take his place. Zawahiri? They'd be idiots not to have some sort of a continuity plan. Nothing will change.

fox news said that his second in power whom did all the organizing anyway will take over...OBL was just a figurehead...but I am glad they got him. However I am still concerned on two fronts....the real mastermind of alQuada is still at large and pissed at us....and what human rights do we have give up in exchange for "protection".

As for whether or not to party about his death. I can understand those who suffered and personally seen the suffering to feel a sense of national pride.
I also understand the pendulim (sp) of hatred that hatred makes more hatred and continues for infinity untill stopped by compassion. That has worked in the past, but with other situations such an approach would be suicidal. Imagine trying to stop hitler with the power of love? Some people are beyond redemption and just need to be eliminated from the human race for the safety of humanity. Now whether we should party about it...I personally think that is kinda stupid considering how much risk we are at. If you pissed off a grisly bear...would you laugh and celebrate in its face? I dont think so.

Bin Laden's second in command, or co-leader (which I believe is more likely) Zawahiri had him as a figure head because, as Rachel Maddow on MSNBC had said last night, Zawahiri is highly unlikeable, is too much an Egyptian rather than Arab nationalist, and has none of Bin Laden's charisma. In other words, Al Qaeda will probably never be what it had once been, and perhaps we may even see an internal power struggle.

As a Brand, AQ is only valued in western eyes. The Taliban is going to become a political party, other networks run guns and drugs, and OBL was kept till it was time to trade, like Carlos the jackel.

Still, breaking into a mans home, killing his unarmed guests, killing him ' unarmed, before his wife and children, kidnapping some surviving guests, stealing his papers and hard drives, body, and abandoning his wounded wife and children, couild be seen as rude.

Hitler did more damage, 50,000,000 killed, Europe and Russia in flames, and we tried to take him alive. Here a Seal Team had him, a chopper in the courtyard, and they could think nothing of the value of questioning him in a Black Prison in eastern Europe, only shooting him dead, taking pictures, then hauling away the body?

Captured, his whole network would never know if he talked, and most did under torture. He was rich, a million dollar hideout, more stashed, that now goes to someone else. Follow the money would give lots of leads.

In Iraq people were questioned while watching their wives and children being tortured and raped. Wife and children were the closest to him, knew everyone who was allowed in, yet were left behind? Saddams sons and grandsons were killed. The line was killed.

This is a dirty war on both sides, and this does not fit the pattern.

It makes me sick to think that the US taxpayers are paying folks to rape women and children, but I know that rape is a common tool in war...I just wish the US were above such horrendous tactics. Sometimes I wish I were innocent again....but I have seen too much to ever go back into ignorant bliss.
On the other hand, there are psychological techniques to get ppl to talk that dont ever involve being above the law. If you read the book
"never be lied to again" by David J Lieberman....you will find techniques that are used by the FBI to get folks to tell the truth by use of hyponitic suggestions and other ways to overpower one's mind without commiting any hideous crimes like rape and torture. btw....maybe the reason it took them so long to find OBL was because they used torture. When someone is being tortured, they will say anything to get that person to stop....most of it is not true. However with sophisticated mind control tequniques.... the truth is more easlily drawn out of them without horrendous human rights violations on innocent people...aka loved ones.

btw...what do you mean by this does not fit the pattern? Mom thinks they killed him along time ago and kept him on ice or something untill it was convienant to "kill him" I dont really think that is the case....but I do think it was convienant timing for Obama.

Al Zawahari is a Wahabi. A particularly noxious kind of Muslim.

I was just cruising through and a motive for faking his death popped into my head; so that the rest of AQ don't realize that he's in a hole somewhere spilling his guts and they don't take appropriate precautions. Now I don't think that's a likely scenario as the political risk is simply too high, but it is an actual semi-plausible reason to carry out such a charade.

Since when did you become the voice of everyone who went through the 9/11 attacks? I certainly did not take part in nominating you to do so. I was living in NJ at the time of the attacks, I was there with my schoolmates when they found out their family members were killed. My dad worked across the street from the World Trade Center and was never the same after watching several of his friends and coworkers die. I am not celebrating Bin Laden's death. I think it was a very poor move that they did not take him alive, he should've had a trial. He was a horrible, evil man and I do not mourn him, but he was a man nonetheless and deserved to be treated like one. We are supposed to be a civilised country, it would've looked a hell of a lot better if we had taken him alive and given him a fair trial. It would've drawn a huge line between us and him.

Being there for the attacks does not give you the right to determine what is justice, and I don't think it's fair for you to say that you have a bigger say in the situation than others who were not there but experienced the pain of that day just as much as us New Yorkers.

Never said I was the sole voice, or the only voice, in this. As for taking him alive and putting him on trial? really?? You think If bin laden was put in a civilian trial he would be allowed to look at CIA/FBI files on Al-Qaeda as per his defense? you really think that was going to happen? why should my US tax dollars that I work for go toward bin laden remaining in prison for the rest of his life? We all know the verdict of that trial..don't be naive. And Obama was not going to send him a Military tribunal at guantanamo bay considering Obama detests it and would create such a political firestorm over it. This was the BEST possible outcome for anyone...it saves everyone the expense, headaches, etc of putting him on trial and all the crap that comes with it. Again, I never said I was the only one who saw the attacks..but for people to act like Osama is some poor victim here who didn't get what was coming to him is plain stupid. I am not shedding a tear at all.

No bacon? Maybe a slice of ham?

When they killed him (and I believe they did), they got access to the computers in his house. Whatever they have found on there will be far more helpful than anything he would say (but probably wouldn't) if he actually were a prisoner. People can't be counted on to give accurate information, but computer files can.

So I do believe he is dead. I don't need to see a grotesque photo. My reaction to news of his death? Relief. Not jubilation. I didn't feel like dancing. I just felt like there was some closure. It felt like being in limbo these last 10 years when he was somewhere out there. I know this doesn't mean the war(s) or Al Queda ends here. But I still feel relief.

I would have preferred ham, bacon and cheese as opposed to tomato. Gosh you two, now I will be thinking about this sandwich for days until I can order it. :hmph:

If "guilty" is the verdict before the trial has even started, it's not a fair trial. And "guilty" would be the only possible outcome. I think just plain shooting him was more honorable than going through the pretense of a kangaroo court.

Maybe they won't release a photo cause part of his brain would be visible in it.
