I served in the Air Force. The military lifestyle very much suited me. I did rather well in uniform, and received several accommodations, continually received highest possible performance reviews and was promoted early twice (Fairly big accomplishment) in my 4 years of active duty. During my time, I also managed to correct and improve dozens of technical writings, designed testing equipment that streamlined maintenance and discerned the cause of several equipment problems no one else could isolate, aside from my normal duties. (vagueness intentional, sorry civilians :P) I served 2 more years in the Air National Guard, and did rather well there as well, although felt it lacked some of the structure I admired in active duty.

That is the soldier/technician the military decided they don't want any more. Good for them.

Depends on the type of aspie the individual is. My brother would be brilliant in the military (although he'd make a better Bond villain). He's emotionless, logical, uber intelligent, feels no pain, no fear. He's like Terminator. :D

What counts most is combat! I'm sure many citizens are loyal to our USA, but not all of them have what it takes to fight, even with our crappy low standards. Thats why are military sucks, because they think "o if your loyal enough you can fight regardless of physical ability". That's wrong. Countries like Israel do have some conscription to toughen everyone up but in the end, they only take the fittest. The fittest are the est to protect the country.

I'm going to go off tangent a little here, would anyone here be willing to discuss Starcraft 2 strategy with me a little. PM if you are interested (my battle.net is

They ask if you have any medical history. That would include any diagnosis you have. Sure you could lie and say you don't. But you have no idea if they would end up finding out later

Well I don't know that we are all loyal to just anyone, I am that way towards people close to me who I know I can trust.....but it would be quite dangerous to just be loyal to anyone in general.

I would give my loyalty to my country if given the opportunity to serve in the military I am only speaking for myself though cause not all aspies are the same.

Well quite frankly I don't agree with the government and who uses the military, the government...I cannot give my loyalty to this government. Its got nothing to do with this country, and I have no issue with this country its not the fault of the land, trees or mountains that things are going downhill.

I view it as serving the country not the government the government doesn't give a damn about any of us.

I can't believe I didn't see this until now. I'm not sure if this has been discussed on the forums before. I didn't see anything.

Anyways, on April 28 of this year (2010) the US military announced that people with Asperger's were no longer qualified to serve.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this to be honest. On the one hand, it is the responsibility of the military to pick the most able-bodied men possible. And let's face it, people with Asperger's will face problems doing something like this. On the other hand, I don't feel that the United States should just exclude all the people with Asperger's without an examination. For example, my case is fairly mild, and if I wasn't diagnosed, the military probably wouldn't notice or care.

What do you think?

Man.... Thank goodness there are no aspies in the military. I, at least couldn't survive a day. I'd be taken advantage by a pack of high ranking NT officers you know... From what I've heard from most of my friends who are/were in the army the commanding officers tend to be really presumptuous.. Aspies just won't know what hit them. Army ain't democracy, sorry.

How does one signing their life over to this government serve the country if the government does not give a damn about any of us? It just does not make sense to me, I guess.

Because the president is the commander and chief he is the one that controles the military it doesn't make sense to me either but that's how things are in America.

This is how I see it. Frankly, I'm not happy overall with how our military is used. They're put in harms way more than they should be, too often to serve some political power play or commercial interest rather than to defend the constitution or what's right. So if it means a safer world for Aspies - my only wish is it was a safer world for everyone.

Is this for real? This is insanity, ignorance, and discrimination! Now, I don't have any plans to join the military, and I'm diagnosed with PDD-NOS, but I could just as well as have been diagnosed with Asperger's.

My autism would have ZERO effect on my functioning in a military situation, except for friend-making.

Is there anyone I can write a letter to to complain about, or something? I know it'll have no effect; I want to write one anyways.

So just go along with it and don't ask questions? I guess I just can't do that so no military for me.
