http://rt.com/news/autistic-children-de ... visit-241/ They were denied visitation rights because they "Disappoint" guests. Live in 2012 in one of the most modern countries in the world and equal rights are still a laughing matter.

russia - a generally repressive society, still recovering from communist totalitarianism. not surprising.

Russia is generally more progressive then the US, our media would say otherwise.

Stories like these REALLY hurt me to the core. I seriously think I'd react violently if I was the counselor or caretaker of these kids while we were out on a trip.

This happened to me in the UK.

Thing is, it happens everywhere. The really important thing is that there's a rigorous system for pulling them up on it.

I halfly made this account to correct this, the guy (i presume it was a guy) who denied access was not acting in compliance with regulation of the oceanarium. In fact its quite likely that person already got fired for this.

To bring it slightly more in balance, yes they are trying to move people with a large spectrum of disabilities to a lower population day but not for exposure reasons, but more because of a "we need to give them more space as our regular visitors need" type of mindset which is not a bad thing by default at all.

I can explain that easily... decades of an oppressive regime, the people are now stretching their wings in their newly found freedom.

The rule of the communists made it dangerous to admit religion, so religious beliefs are generally kept to oneself, leaving others free to do as they please within the stricture of the law.

The people were warm and welcoming and a great deal less judgemental than most I have met in the US

There was also this;
**The Oceanarium's press service has said it was unaware of the incident, according to Svetlana Shtarkova, the co-chair of the Council of the All-Russian Society for Children with Disabilities. It said that people with disabilities visiting the Oceanarium are normally offered visits on days with less traffic**

The people running this joint are probably not sophisticated enough to be tactful (hardly surprising in post-communist Russia) but it might be that the original intention was to bring autistic kids into the oceanarium when there are less crowds (i.e cleaning day) to disturb them.
