WASHINGTON: The United States said Thursday it has conducted a "subcritical" nuclear test at an underground site to study the behavior of nuclear materials without triggering an atomic explosion.

The test, conducted Wednesday in Nevada, aims to gather scientific data that will "provide crucial information to maintain the safety and effectiveness of the nation's nuclear weapons," the Energy Department said in a statement.

Is there anything overly dangerous in this test? If not then I have to agree with Evinco.

i think you make the mistake of believing that testing anything nuclear is dangerous, this is not the case.

Certainly less dangerous than the underground nuclear explosions.

Yes I do,3 -mile island,Chernobyl,the tsunami in Japan.
The one near me got a fine awhile back for some sort of overheating violation.
The people operating them are imperfect beings so mistakes can and will be made to the detriment of all.

So true....

Someone always takes a shortcut, tries to save money, covers up a 'little' mistake, or management tries to get too much done with too few personnel.

In all the cases mentioned the greatest danger came from mismanagement, not the nuclear technology per se.

In any case the newest designs are far safer than the ones that went haywire because of incompetent management and maintenance.

As far as underground nuclear explosions go, the leakage of radioactive material is barely detectable. Not to worry.

If above ground tests didn't kill us, surely below ground tests will not.

I'm not sure that is the benchmark for newsworthiness.

After all, if we are going to stand up and complain about Iran and North Korea conducting research into nuclear fission technology, then I think it is crucial for us to understand the nature of research and testing that is going on in the existing nuclear states, and the ways in which that research and testing differs from that which we are complaining about in Iran and North Korea.

Was this test dangerous? I think not.

Would it be dangerous for "I'm-a-dinner-jacket" (thanks to Dara Ó Briain for that one) to claim "Our tests are pefectly fine so long as you are testing?" Probably moreso. So in that vein, I am just as happy to know what is going on. And that makes it newsworthy.
