Hello,
I don't post a lot on this forum, but I do read it. I am starting this thread because I value your opinions on "What the public really needs to know about Asperger's." I write a blog that receives a fairly decent amount of traffic, my April post will be about Asperger's Awareness, and I plan on using your comments in that post (not your name-- just the content/ideas that you suggest). Please don't reply if you don't want me to use your ideas/comments.

I am especially interested in links you may know of that describe what Asperger's is... since we have it, we know whether or not the links are BS-- but for people without it who are trying to learn about it, it can be difficult to distinguish fact from BS. (The recent news coverage of Adam Lanza being a prime example.)

If anyone has a personal story that they would like me to share in order to illustrate any of the characteristics of what Asperger's is (or is not, I suppose), then that would be terrific.

Thank you VERY much.

If you want it in a sound bite that an NT can easily digest, give up. The biggest problem is that most of them don't want to know.
It’s a different operating system, a different psychology, that doesn’t readily translate.

If you want a beginning of a clue, try this thread: “Why therapy won’t work” http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt226852.html

I’ve seen threads go longer and deeper, but this one is recent and would be a good start.

With all due respect-- NO!

The purpose of Autism Awareness Month is to counteract the very sentiment that you have intimated.

I do appreciate the link you provided. Thank you.

Anyone else?

That’s why a lot of Aspies disapprove of “Autism Awareness Month,” and a lot of others ignore it or are confused by it.
The very purpose of it is to define us within the terms of the NT bias: broken, pathetic, a life not worth living that needs
to be fixed so that we can be more like them. If that were possible or desirable, this site wouldn’t exist.
That’s why the parodies are so popular in places like WP. http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Neur ... l_syndrome

Okay, how about this sound byte (which I think is largely true):

The Autism Spectrum is first and foremost sensory issues (and stimming is healthy and functional in a number of ways, including helping to relieve sensory issues, as well as helping to maintain concentration). And the Spectrum is only secondarily social issues.

And I think we should pitch people like:

Jane Austen
Jim Hensen,
Carl Sagan,

all of whom may well have been on the Asperger's-Autism Spectrum

(although we should be cautious about 'outing' people still living)

This logic is lost on me. Since when do NTs own Autism Awareness Month?

The very purpose of it is to define us within the terms of the NT bias? Really? Who says? You? Others? Why subscribe to that mentality? That would be a choice to believe that way. I choose not to-- that's for sure!

The purpose of Autism Awareness Month is to raise awareness of what autism is-- plain and simple: the purpose is to inform the ignorant.

Ugh. I'm not looking for conjecture.
