While the subject line of this thread sounds like the theme for a redneck 8th grade dance, it's unfortunately the topic of a news story last night. Seems some kids at the middle school got hold of some 'shine and started sipping during school. I don't know who it was yet, but I'm sure I'll find out before the weekend is over. The gossip will be all over town before Monday.

Sadly, when I heard about this my first reaction wasn't shock that kids that age had access to alcohol or outrage at the parents who had been so irresponsible as to leave their illegal homemade liquor where their kids could find it, or even disappointment at how careless our society has become. My very first reaction was "Where did they get it?!?!?" because I only know one person who can get it and it's not very often that she is able to. I was offended that kids that age could get hold of it when I can't.

Oh well, here's the link. Link to the story

It took me a minute to process the word moonshine.

I'M in 8th grade and barely know what it is, how the HECK did they get their hands on it? Aye carumba.

Well, I live way out in the country and there are a lot of people who make it, but I only know one person I can get it from. Obviously they know someone too and it's not the same one I know. I want to know who lol.

I'd be scared to drink the stuff. What is it, like, 180 proof? A few glasses of that and I'll' be cooling off in county jail for the next three days.

The article says, "what was supposed to be moonshine," and that after a few if them sipped it, one went to the ER. Who knows what the stuff actually was... but it could've been anything these kids thought would get them drunk; I wouldn't assume it was actual, correctly made, moonshine. Could've been rubbing alcohol for all we know...

My son and friends at age 15 was caught brewing alcohol in plastic orange juice bottles under the backseat of the school bus.
They got the recipe off the school's internet (which had expensive filters to prevent that sort of thing).
He only got caught because the younger kids complained that he wouldn't give them any. And he had the cheek to point out that meant he was being responsible .

I would assume that it was actual, correctly made, moonshine. The people at the school, the cops, the EMT's and the hospital staff are mostly from around here. Like I said, it's around here but it's just hard to get your hands on all the time. Most people around here have seen it at least once. I'm sure if it was something like Everclear they would have said that in the article. I'm also sure that the cop smelled and tasted it to see what it was too. I know who was working that day and trust me, he would know moonshine. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't have a close family member with a still out in the woods lol. The lady I get it from is married to a cop and she gets it from a relative. People around here don't see making moonshine as something horrible to do. Yes, it's illegal but everybody knows it's only illegal because they can't tax it and most people, even those who don't drink or if they do they don't drink shine, will tell you that people should be free to make it for themselves if they want to and some think that people should be able to sell it too.

You have to understand where I live. I'm in the backwoods in rural Alabama. I just happen to live in the "town" part of it, which is very small. If whoever talked to the reporters said it was moonshine, it was moonshine.

They are probably making the 'shine themselves and bringing it in to school.
I'm sure the how to part can be found somewhere on the internet....

They stole it from their parents stash. And you can buy legal moonshine at liquor stores ,Popcorn Sutton's brand and Georgia moonshine,it's just not as strong as the homemade stuff.

I think I've seen "Georgia Moonshine" marked stuff in liquor stores somewhere.
It was only like 80 proof so it's hardly real moonshine.
Seriously, when I was 13 I was putting supplies together to set up a still in the hollow behind our house.
I lost interest before I got enough materials together and moved on to other things .

Such phenomena is well documented. For further reading on the subject:
