They assaulted the driver and passenger and stole their vehicle at gunpoint, so I'd call them a bit more than dumb goofs. I've no sympathy for their self-inflicted fate in such circumstances.

I know what you mean, but actually I would have thought, these typical radiation warning symbols known to the broad majority, because of all kind of films and thrillers... So I would have understood, that they got rid of it the moment the realized it to AVOID every contact with it.

Dont know, maybe the watched instead to much Simpsons, and thought to find a funny, green glowing staff in it, they could use as cheap glow-bulb, or whatever...

^ More like they just ignored the radiation warning labels and figured they'd look anyway to see if there was something valuable sealed in the case.

Physical assault or not, if they opened the lid and go irradiated out of sheer ignorance/greed, they still come across as "dumb goofs" in my humble opinion.

As much as I detest armed robbers, death from acute radiation syndrome is a very, very, very ugly way to die (the body *literally* breaks down from the inside and out), and I would consider it a horrible death not fit for even my worst enemy.

If we are to believe the claims from the Mexican nuclear safety authorities that they are certain to die (which would put the absorbed dose at around 6+ Gy), then the best thing the thieves could do would probably be to blow their own brains out.

Police block Mexico hospital, 6 may have radiation

An official confirmed Mexican media reports that 6 people have been admitted to a hospital in Pachuca and may have been exposed to a stolen source of cobalt-60.

Six people ... so far, only one is currently showing any symptoms of radiation poisoning, but it may only be a matter of time for the rest.

I hope that none of the six are children.

This is like waiting for the punchline....that never comes. The few people that showed up in the article seem ok, and don't appear to be the criminals.

This reminds me of a incident that happened at my own collage were one of the stones on display in a classroom turned out to highly radioactive. It was only by chance that this was discovered when someone decided to have fun with a Geiger counter. They had a bit of a problem of disposing of it. I think it was eventually buried and encased in a few feet of concrete.

With the amount of activity in the stolen Co-60, it is extremely unlikely that the thieves are still alive.
