Seriously?

IMO, I think the Ugandan government is copying Russia.

In other news: New Mexico same-sex marriage ruling comes amid long wait, national trend

Associated Press wrote:
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - ... The state's highest court declared it was unconstitutional to deny marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples ... "We hold that the State of New Mexico is constitutionally required to allow same-gender couples to marry and must extend to them the rights, protections and responsibilities that derive from civil marriage under New Mexico law," Justice Edward L. Chavez wrote...

In still other news: Judge strikes down Utah's same-sex marriage ban

MSN wrote:
SALT LAKE CITY - A federal judge struck down Utah's same-sex marriage ban Friday in a decision that brings a nationwide shift toward allowing gay marriage to a conservative state where the Mormon church has long been against it. U.S. District Judge Robert J. Shelby issued a 53-page ruling Friday saying Utah's law passed by voters in 2004 violates gay and lesbian couples' rights to due process and equal protection under the 14th Amendment.

So ... as bad as some people will claim that America is, there are countries that are much, much worse.

Wait, what? Utah?! That was unexpected.

So Uganda finally passed their anti-gay bill. Life imprisonment for "repeat offenders" ... what a joke. At least they're not going to kill gay people now. Some countries still do.

About Utah: Somewhere, Mitt Romney is foaming at the mouth at the realization gay marriage is now legal EVERYWHERE he owns a home. XD

Many on this forum do not believe gay marriage to be a step forward in human rights. I ask that you respect our beliefs, too.

I don't even want to think about what happened to them during the Amin years.

Some of us don't believe statism is a belief that deserves respect, rather derision.

The horrific irony is that many of these third world countries would likely not resort to such violent measures had western world missionaries not convert them to their faith to begin with.

The comedic irony is that anyone would believe such crap.

May as well blame the Native American tribes who taught Europeans to inhale tobacco smoke for the COPD that killed my father.

Just like it was my father's choice to ruin his health by smoking, so is it the choice of those third-world governments to resort to violence.

Blame the finger on the trigger, kid; not the name on the gun.

Actually, I think that homophobia is pretty widespread traditonally. Although, not every one has it.

Yowero Museveni, the Ugandan dictator, is a member of a U.S.-based Christian fundy group called The Family. He is very much closely allied with the U.S. religious right. He is devoted also to their object of worship, Israel, and the South Sudanese massacre dictatorship is in a sense their love child. The dictator there is having his people go door to door to execute those of the wrong tribe.

Uganda: Museveni 'seeks US advice on homosexuality'
BBC, 22 February 2014
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-26297356

  • Initially, the Ugandan president was going to veto the controversial anti-gay bill.
  • Then a group of Ugandan scientists reported to him that being gay is a behaviour and a choice; the president then said he'll sign the bill into law.
  • Now he's put it on hold, and is reportedly asking American scientists to prove that homosexuality is innate and not a choice before he makes a final decision.

This would be downright comical, if the freedoms of LGBT citizens in Uganda weren't at stake.

If I was running the country (Australia) I'd withdraw all aid money we give them until they repealed the laws and encourage others to do so. It's the only way they'll learn.

Ugandan president signs law to jail gays for life
The Sydney Morning Herald, 25 February 2014
http://www.smh.com.au/world/ugandan-pre ... hvdn7.html

  • Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni signs anti-gay bill into law that jails "repeat offenders" for life, etc.
  • Asserts Uganda's right to make its own laws, in response to international condemnation.
  • Explains his particular revulsion to homosexuality, describing gay people as heterosexuals motivated by money to become gay.
  • Bill has widespread support among Ugandans.

That's the thing with states - they claim that they possess sovereignty that no-one has the right to overrule, but can't take it when individuals claim the same...
