In the third world, women or girls of any age have such low social status that they're scarcely considered human. Stories like this make me glad that the good Lord chose to have me born in an industrialized western country.

In Australia, despite having one the highest standard of living in the western world, 1 in 3 women will experience domestic violence and 1 in 5 will be sexually assaulted.

According to a 2014 study published by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), approximately one third of all women in the EU were said to have suffered physical and/or sexual abuse. At the top end was Denmark (52%), Finland (47%) and Sweden (46%).

Scandanavian countries are supposed to have the best reputation for womens equality?

Please take these statistics in our own backyard in mind before casting judgement on third world countries where cultural backwardness and poverty mean women have a multitude of other problems beyond predatory men.

As bad as some men behave in the west, women have it much worse in the third world. The fact that third world women are standing up for their rights at all - and are actually being listened to - is a testament to western influence.

Women have it worse because they are too preoccupied by poverty, lack of basic resources and education to report misconduct of males in their village.

In the case of our "enlightened" western countries the women are too ashamed to report the fact their uncle or cousin groped or raped them due to the social stigma. The psychological scars are the same for all victims whether they are cafe latte sipping middle class American women or village women in India.

That is likely true, but at least honor killings in the west are almost unheard of today.

Honor killings are a backward practice that aren't related to the story. The men who attacked the 6 yr old are paedophiles. Paedophilia is a major problem in western countries as well and I'd like to see more done to find and weed out this people in my own country rather than worry about a hopeless situation in a third world country.

I don't think the rates are lower in other countries, just that the report rates for rape are higher in those Scandinavian countries +Finland. Some countries have extremely low incidence of reported rape or violence, that to me sounds much worse for women's equality.

A security guard and the gym teacher. Why would they do that to a 6 yr old? Cameras are the best things. Please invest in cameras!

I was only using honor killings as an example of the backwardness of the third world.
