Some people get offended by all sorts of things nowadays. Pretty soon every single TV show and film and everything will be banned because everything will be offensive to somebody.

Winnie the Pooh has been around since the 1940s, and it has never harmed my grandparents, my parents, and my generation.

I think kids these days are being wrapped up in cotton wool too much. That is actually destroying them because when they grow up and get jobs and have to be independent, they won't know what's hit them. I feel sorry for todays kids.

Not having had to grow up with mainstream american censorship, I am quite amused by people being upset about this. I mean, does anyone remember the eraly episodes of Dragon Ball, in which Son Goku bathed naked and all the sort of obscene srt of innocent boob-flashing? no? that might be, because for the Amercan version, people drew shorts on Goku and just edited out the naughty bits.
Lilo & Stitch, the Disney film, was edited for German audiences, as all the shooting towards the end of the film was considered too violent for the age-rating the Disney corporation was aiming for.
So... let the Polish censor your sexually ambiguous bear, if they feel like it.
Or un-censor Son goku's infant genitals.

That being said, I think the Polish in this case were just feeling Winnie the Pooh was a bit of a foreign intruder, and just needed to come up with reasons to reject this bear and go with their own nostalgia-inducing bear. You know, there's culture and kid's books in other countries, too!

WELL ACTUALLY

(I've always wanted to say that)

you're ALL WRONG (that too)

it is not censorship and it is not PC gone mad. it was actually a really funny and light hearted discussion between a bunch of local bureaucrats who are OBVIOUSLY bored off their heads in their jobs, and they were discussing the merits of Winnie the Pooh vs his Polish equivalent "Mis Uszatek" who wears pants and thus is obviously superior.

also, discussing the alleged homosexuality of cartoon characters is really quite funny in Polish, but that might be just lost in translation.

the journalists who misreported the story are seriously lacking in sense of humour and/or material to write about.

and that the British press happily gobbles up anything that makes Poles look bad is really nothing new.

^^^^ Yup, and I fail to see why this "news" would reach an international audience. It's just a tiny village with some local goofball politicians, it is not representative of the rest of Poland.

Citizens of the European Union have the right to live and work in other member states, so many Poles have moved to Britain for work because of the better economy. There are also many Poles in the Netherlands, Germany and France. There is even a Polish grocery store close to where I live.
Since they are immigrants they get the usual "they take our jobs" "they are drunks" "they don't belong here" "they don't speak out language very well" "they are criminals" crap from certain segments of society.

My guess is that this is a (really terrible) smokescreen argument, probably something of a nationalist nature. The councilman expresses his preference for Miś Uszatek, the local homegrown character, rather than Winnie-the-Pooh, in his mind a symbol of western imperialism and commercialism. Just another incident in the clash between east vs west and old vs new in that part of the world, but with a pretty hilarious result.

^^^ Someone should tell the people in that village that the cold war is over. Today Poland is probably one of the most pro-NATO and anti-Russian countries there is.
