This was the one good thing about war. It helped keep the population down. These days, wars are fought with just a few well-trained soldiers, not the hundreds of thousands of cannon fodder.

When I read about people like this Guillebaud guy I start to sympathize with people who claim there is a radical leftist agenda behind much of the global warming thing.

I saw a headline in the paper the other day about how global warming will create 1 billion refugees. And it's western man who is largely to blame.

So it goes like this:
1. People in the West must have less children
2. People in the West must open their borders to the poor and the needy from all over the world

Which is pretty similar to what people in the West have been lectured about for decades, except before it was in the name of feminism and multiculturalism.

Wealthy generally have in lower birth rates. Effective economic systems results in wealth. But the developing world does not have as much in effective economics. They also face stringent restrictions on technologies. The western world was built on dirty unclear power plants, and industry but now via technological advancements generated over time from rich economies power generation, and industry are became cleaner and more effective. China will soon overtake the United States in emissions of Greenhouse Gas, with only a third of it's economic production, yet to reverse it's economic liberalizations would result also reverse it's improvements in energy efficiency.

The third world can also follow the same path if only the elite and comfortable in the west stop believing the illusion that poverty is merely a "lifestyle," a product of "diversity."

I don't really see how the elites in the West are holding the Third World back. For example, the West has given over $300 billion in aid to Africa since the 1960s, but Africa is still poor.

Jimservo, I believe that you are labouring under an illusion, and that if members of the Western elite remain puzzled by the continuing poverty in Africa, then they are labouring under the same illusion as you.

Good point.

If Mr Guillebaud is worried about population growth in the West, I wonder why he didn't suggest stopping or restricting immigration.

If anyone in the West does actually heed this guy's so-called advice, I doubt it'll be blacks or Muslims.

Codrac,I can explain this.

1. He's worried about population growth
2.We have an over-zealous PC culture here in England
3. In light of 2, to restrict/stop immigration would be considered racist
4. In light of 1, 2, and 3, the only way to not be considered racist is to restrict the populaion groth inside the borders.
