Hopefully, the voters will remember this come the next election.

I think most people know they have said something in private at least once, that they'd be horrified to find out had been recorded and published.

But as mayor of a city, he should know he doesn't have that luxury accorded to private citizens.

Fairly big faux pas

I see a remark such as this as a wake-up call. I feel this is how the majority of NTs view us Aspies and others on the spectrum.

I hope not, but I fear you're right.

I'm just saying in general I think people are less bothered these days by leaked offensive things someone said. That there's been so much stuff said in private and off the record that's been leaked, people have become tired of it and/or desensitized to it. And also knowing they themselves have been guilty of a similar offence on some level.

Well in this case what was said, was said about the intellectually disabled. Particularly those with Down's syndrome. Aspies aren't intellectually disabled. However I'm quite sure most "misfits" are viewed with scorn by many. I think that's human nature and we'd be fooling ourselves to believe it's not a common characteristic in a lot of people, even aspies.

So, he was double-dipping? I presume that, since it was a public job, the city government knew of his work, and applicable laws didn't prohibit him from working for government and a private business.

Yeah!

That's what I was wondering.

That's like Congress allowing Trump to keep on doing the "Apprentice" while he also serves as the leader of the Free World. Crazy.

If this is true (and an 80% chance is good) he should be fired. What a disgusting creep. He should know better, Warren, Michigan has a population of 134,000+! People with Down's syndrome are NOT ret*ds. They are unique people, just like autistics and others with disabilities. Love seeing those inspiring stories of people with Down's syndrome and cerebral palsy, etc. doing wonderful things.

It's sad but true how such awful opinions are not that uncommon among people. They face someone or something they don't understand or can't relate to, and their gut instincts tells them to fear, or hate it.

Actually that's pretty funny. Most people think that, they just won't let themselves say that out loud. When somebody actually gets busted saying things like that, everyone will jump on them, because it's improper, but they secretly agree with every word he's saying.

I'm glad I don't live in that city as, I probably would give the mayor a piece of my mind in colorful verbal language. To dehumanize people is truly barbaric especially when your making reference to people with mental difficulties shall we say.

perhaps not quite to this extent...but maybe it was worsened by having a sucky job.

I know that physical deformity and neurodiversity exist. I have never been angry at someone, over their conspicuous handicap, or mistreated them, but don't understand why it is put on parade or cause for celebration. If they are especially capable, then, they should be judged, on par with normal people, while probably trying to come across as normal. You put people in speech classes and reprimand their posture. You don't praise crooked teeth and myopia.

What if it was ok, for Forrest Gump to have malformed legs.
